Hospital guild’s thrift shop open Saturday

The Sequim Dungeness Hospital Guild’s thrift shop, at 204 W. Bell St. in Sequim, will be open from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, April 18.

Featured will be a solid wood drop-leaf table, a large antique curio cabinet, a glass-topped coffee table and a large computer desk with hutch, as well as spring clothing for everyone, fine jewelry and handbags, kitchen appliances and dishware, puzzles and books. All white-tagged items will be marked half-price. A few tickets are available for the guild’s annual Fashion show/silent auction and luncheon set for May 3 at 7 Cedars Casino.

Native plant landscaping workshop set

The Clallam Conservation District will hold a free workshop focusing on landscaping with native plants Saturday, April 28.

Because of space limitations, preregistration is required. To register, call the district at 360-775-3747 ext. 5.

The class will be held at 1 p.m. at the Dungeness County Park recreation area at 554 Voice of America Road.

Joe Holtrop will lead the workshop and share insights on how to incorporate native plants into attendees’ landscapes.

A two-mile hike through the park will begin the class, with a description of more than 25 native trees and shrubs following.

The plants’ cultural requirements, aesthetic attributes, as well as environmental and wildlife habitat benefits will also be included.

Holtrop holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s in landscape architecture, and has conducted landscape-related workshops since 1990.

Sequim guild hosting Bunco party

The Sequim Guild of Seattle Children’s Hospital hosts “Spring Special,” its April Bunco Party, from noon-3 p.m. Friday, April 20, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 N. 5th Ave.

Win prizes by playing Bunco, bid on various items at a silent auction and enjoy a lunch made by guild members, including dessert.

Cost is $12 at the door, with all proceeds going to Seattle Children’s Hospital for uncompensated care.

County website service interruption possible

Clallam County officials are planning a maintenance outage for 5 p.m. Friday, April 20, through 5 p.m. Saturday, April 21. All Clallam.net Internet services will be affected by this outage. As work is completed, services may be restored earlier in the day on Saturday, but staff anticipates all services will be available no later than 5 p.m.

Shipley Center sets ‘Spring Fling’

The second-annual Shipley Center Spring Fling is set for 9 a.m.-3 p.m. April 20-21, at 921 E. Hammond St. The event is a bazaar featuring crafts, baked goods and (new this year) plants for purchase. Raffle tickets ($1) will be sold for a variety of items donated by event vendors. The Cafe at Shipley Center will be open both days.

Flea market set

The Sequim Prairie Grange hosts a flea market from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, April 21, at 290 Macleay Road. Vendors will be in the main building as well as the outdoor kitchen and grange grounds. Hybrid, electric vehicle exhibit comes to PT

A hybrid and electric vehicle exhibit is set for April 20-21 at the Northwest Maritime Center, 431 Water St, Port Townsend. The event is free and open to the public.

Electric and hybrid vehicles from automakers Honda, Toyota, Nissan and Chrysler will be on display and available for test drives to allow the public to learn about advances in green technology. The public is invited to view the vehicles from 1-6 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Saturday.

Wilder Auto of Port Angeles will provide information and answer questions about the latest news and developments in battery technology, recharging options, mileage range, cost benefits and availability of a variety of electric and hybrid vehicles. A $10 donation will be made to the Northwest Maritime Center with every test drive.

Wild Birds hosting Earth Day party

Wild Birds Unlimited in Gardiner hosts its 14th-annual Earth Day Celebration from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Jaye and Gary Moore of the nonprofit Northwest Raptor and Wildlife Center will be on hand with their rehabilitated birds of prey; get an up-close at the birds and feathered find out more about the raptor center. Other special guests include local Northwest native flute player Vincent Redhouse and the Wind People.

And, other local organizations from the Peninsula will be present to share the programs and art they are working on to support, protect and preserve our native wildlife, habitat and resources.

NOLS has free Social Security presentations

The North Olympic Library System will offer two free upcoming educational presentations about Social Security benefits and programs.

Representatives from the Social Security Administration office will present at the Port Angels Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., at noon on Tuesday, April 24, and at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 26.

County commission to meet April 18

The Clallam County Planning Commission meets at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles. On the agenda is a public hearing regarding 2017 second half current use assessment applications.

Support group to meet starting May 2

A confidential, supportive group meets on Wednesdays in Sequim starting May 2. The group meets from 4-5:15 p.m., for practical and creative ways of living with depression and anxiety. The group limit is eight and pre-registration is required by calling 360-531-4157.

The group is facilitated by Diane Porter, a Ph.D candidate in somatic psychology.

Purse auction/fundraiser set in Port Angeles

Members of the Soroptimist International of Port Angeles Jet Set host a Cinco de Mayo purse auction scholarship fundraiser from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at the Port Angeles Yacht Club, 1305 Marine Dr.

Enjoy food, fun and purse shopping. Tickets are $20 and may be purchased online at www.sijetset.com.

Proceeds go to scholarships for Port Angeles women and girls.

Free Park Day set

Earth Day is celebrated Sunday, April 22, and Washington State Parks invite visitors to enjoy a state park for free that day.

April 22 is the fifth of 12 State Parks “free days” in 2018, when visitors are not required to display the Discover Pass for day use visits to a park. The free days are in keeping with legislation that created the Discover Pass, which costs $30 for an annual pass or $10 for a one-day pass and is required for vehicle access to state recreation lands managed by Washington State Parks, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Department of Natural Resources.

Free dinner on tap at Trinity United

A free community dinner will be served at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 26, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave.

The meal includes baked chicken, confetti rice, vegetables, carrot salad, dessert and beverages.

Reservations are required and may be made by calling the church at 360-683-5367 between 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on the Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday before the dinner or by email to dinnerstumc@aol.com.

The church presents the dinners on the last Thursday of each month; the exception is the May dinner scheduled for one week earlier (May 24) because of a scheduling conflict.

Park fees increase

The National Park Service announced on April 12 that Olympic National Park will increase entrance fees to provide funding for infrastructure and maintenance needs. Effective June 1, the park entrance fee will be $30 per vehicle or $25 per motorcycle. The per-person pass will be $15 and an annual park pass will cost $55. Those rates are a $5 increase in all categories from the current rate.

The park service last October proposed a plan to adopt seasonal pricing at Olympic National Park and 16 other national parks to raise additional revenue for infrastructure and maintenance needs.
