‘Tree Stories’ slated
The Sequim Prairie Garden Club will host Kathy Steichen, a 35-year veteran of the National Park Service, when it meets on Monday, May 5 at Pioneer Memorial Park, 387 E. Washington St.
Steichen’s presentation, “Tree Stories,” will provide details of Pioneer Park’s development.
Steichen’s deep-rooted connection to the arboreal kingdom began in her formative years, scaling a majestic silver maple in Seattle. This early fascination blossomed into a distinguished career, enhanced by a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Washington College of Forest Resources.
For over three decades, Steichen served within the National Park Service, contributing her expertise to some of America’s most ecologically significant landscapes, including Denali, Mount Rainier, Olympic, Wind Cave, and Yellowstone National Parks. Her firsthand experience within these diverse ecosystems provides a unique and authoritative perspective on the vital role trees play in our environment and Pioneer Memorial Park.
Drawing upon the foundational principle espoused by the Sequim Prairie Garden Club – echoing the profound Chinese Proverb, “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now” – Steichen will guide attendees through an exploration of the diverse and significant tree species thriving within Pioneer Memorial Park and accredited arboretum.
Social time will be at 10 a.m., and the program will start at 10:30 a.m. At 11:45 a.m., there will be lunch and business meetings.

Geological Society to meet
On Saturday, May 3, the Quimper Geological Society will host Leigh Tucker and Marquis Richardson, who will lecture on garnet in the beach sands of the Olympic Coast. The talk will focus on where these garnet sands come from and how they got there.
Garnets form in metamorphic environments, and associated minerals tell us about the temperature and the pressure the rock sustained.
The meeting will take place at Port Townsend First Baptist Church, 1202 Lawrence St. Doors open at 3:30 p.m. and the meeting starts at 4 p.m.
The event is free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted at the door.
