Sock drive set at Kettle’s

Public hearing set on wireless facilities

The Clallam County Planning Commission meets at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles. The agenda includes a public hearing regarding a proposed draft ordinance amendment to Chapter 33.49 concerning Wireless Communication Facilities. Specifically, the draft proposes to repeal portions of the existing ordinance, create new sections relating to development standards, small cell technology, wireless communication procedure, design standards, and amend certain standards and provisions that are consistent with federal regulations.

Hood Canal Bridge four-hour closure set

Take note overnight Olympic Peninsula travelers: from 10 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, to 2 a.m. Friday, Feb. 22, State Route 104/Hood Canal Bridge will be closed to vehicle traffic.

Bridge maintenance crews for the Washington State Department of Transportation are conducting repairs to the east half of the bridge lift during that time. The nature of the repairs require the bridge to be closed to traffic for the full four-hour period, state transportation officials said.

Drivers are encouraged to sign up for WSDOT email updates (public.govdelivery.com/accounts/WADOT/subscriber/new?topic_id=WADOT_190) and check the WSDOT Hood Canal Bridge webpage (www.wsdot.com/traffic/hoodcanal/default.aspx) for up-to-the minute bridge information.

BUNCO party set

Sequim Guild of Seattle Children’s hospital is sponsoring its first BUNCO party of 2019. Win prizes playing Bunco, enjoy a lunch made by guild members and bid on 23 choices at a silent auction. The event is set for noon-3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth Ave.

Tickets are $15 at the door (doors open at 11:30 a.m.), and all proceeds go to Seattle Children’s Hospital for uncompensated care.

Anglers’ fundraiser set for Feb. 23

The Puget Sound Anglers North Olympic Peninsula Chapter will host the group’s annual Kids Fishing Day fundraiser at Sunland Golf and Country Club on Saturday, Feb. 23. The fundraiser supports all club initiatives, including Kids Fishing Day (set for April 13 this year) and Kids Fall Fishing at Carrie Blake Community Park, scholarships to local students, the new Veterans Fishing Program, Dungeness Fish Hatchery volunteers, Crab Fest Grab-a-Carb-Derby and Salmon in the Classroom (in conjunction with the Dungeness River Center).

Doors open at 4:30 p.m. for the silent auction, and dinner will be served starting at 5:30 p.m. and the main event, the live auction with John Beath, starts at 7 p.m.

Seed swap set in Port Hadlock

The Jefferson County Seed Library hosts a “Seed Swap” from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Washington State University Classroom at 97 Oak Bay Road, Port Hadlock.

The event is designed to “bring together a community of seed savers to encourage learning, sharing and community, strengthen biodiversity, provide alternatives to genetically modified seeds and develop seeds adapted to Jefferson County soils and climate,” event organizers say.

The seed library is located at the WSU Office, 121 Oak Bay Road; library hours are Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m.-2 p.m., February through October.

Library membership is free and open to all. The library will loan open-pollinated vegetable, herb and flower seeds to patrons who will plant and harvest some of the seeds to be returned to the library.

TAIZE service canceled

The ecumenical TAIZE service at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth Ave., set for Monday, Feb. 25, has been canceled.

Taize will continue to be held the fourth Monday of each month; the service resumes on Monday, March 25.

In a meditative candlelit atmosphere that includes singing simple repetitive songs, attendees are encouraged to sit peacefully during the hour-long service or join in a chorus while experiencing the calming effect of being in God’s presence.

Tickets are on sale now for Habitat of Clallam County’s annual “A Taste of the Peninsula,” set for Saturday, April 13, at the Red Lion Hotel, 221 N. Lincoln St., Port Angeles.

Transit offers discount passes for nonprofits

The Clallam Transit System is inviting nonprofit organizations and government agencies in Clallam County to apply for a grant award through the CTS Discounted Transit Pass Grant Program. The program is offering up to $25,000 in discounted transit passes to qualifying agencies who serve low-income clients to buy monthly adult and youth transit passes and day pass strip tickets at a 50 percent discount for the grant period beginning April 1.

The closing date for applications is 5 p.m. Monday, March 11.

Civil discourse in an ‘Angry Age’

The Humanities Washington Speakers Bureau offers “Civil Conversation in an Angry Age,” a presentation by philosopher David E. Smith, starting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St.

A Tacoma native, Smith takes a deep look at moments when civility breaks down. “By mapping the structure of how we converse and digging into the root causes of both civility and incivility, Smith explores how we can have meaningful, respectful conversations on notoriously difficult topics like politics, religion and morality,” program organizers say.

Smith holds a doctorate in religious studies from Temple University. For the past decade he has held roles as a lecturer, assistant professor and associate professor of philosophy and religious

studies. He currently teaches at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Washington and frequently gives lectures in libraries, community centers and retirement centers.

Free community meal set

A free community dinner will be served at 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave.

The meal includes turkey, gravy, rice, vegetables, green salad, dessert and beverages.

Reservations are required and may be made by calling the church at 360-683-5367 between 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on the Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday before the dinner, or by email to dinnerstumc@aol.com.

The church presents the dinners on the last Thursday of each month.

Groundbreaking for tribe’s hotel on tap

The ground-breaking for the first phase of a $40 million project on the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe’s main campus is set for 2 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28, at 7 Cedars Casino, 270756 US Highway 101, Blyn.

United Way amends ‘Fuel the Way’ schedule

United Way of Clallam County has tweaked the scheduled for its “Fuel the Way” fundraiser because of poor weather in recent weeks.

The event sees five gas stations throughout the Port Angeles area to help raise funds for local nonprofits on Saturdays, donating 10 cents per gallon purchased.

The amended schedule is: March 2, First Race Car Wash/76 Station, 907 E. First St.; March 16, 76 Station, 331 W. First St.; March 31, Fairmount Shell, 1137 W. US Highway 101, and April 6, Lovell’s Chevron, 601 E. First St., and Roadrunner Shell, 1023 E. Front St.

United Way board members will be on location at each gas station to thank customers and help them sign up to win a $50 gas card.

The sequim Senior Singles group is hosting a luncheon for singles over 50 on Saturday, March 9, at the Parkwood Clubhouse, 261520 US Highway 101. Doors open at noon and lunch is served at 1 p.m.
