Irrigation pioneers announced
The Sequim Pioneer Association has selected Dr. Neil Cays and Esther Heuhslein Nelson as Grand Pioneers for the 2013 Sequim irrigation Festival. Honorary Pioneers are R.F. Harry Schlaffman and Nancy Jarmuth Smith. They will be honored at the annual Pioneer Dinner and at the Grand Parade in May.
OMC board cancels meeting
The Olympic Medical Center Board of Commissioners meeting for today, Jan. 2, has been canceled. The next regularly scheduled meeting is at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, in Linkletter Hall, Olympic Medical Center, 939 Caroline St., Port Angeles.
County planning meeting canceled
The Clallam County Planning Commission has canceled its meeting for today, Jan. 2; the commission reconvenes Jan. 16. Call 417-2277 for more information.
Spindle guild to meet
The North Olympic Shuttle and Spindle Guild meets at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, at the Sequim Community Church Annex, 950 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim. Bring lunch, projects. For more information, call 683-7913.
‘Paws to Read’ set
The Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., hosts Paws to Read from 3-4 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, in collaboration with Olympic Gentle Paws.
Children can practice their reading skills by reading, or just talking, to a therapy dog. The free program is suited for children ages 6 and up, but everyone is welcome. There is no preregistration necessary and participants can stop by anytime between 3-4 p.m.

Deaf Coffee House to meet

Beachcombers or birders wanted
Help make a difference for the environment by collecting data for the Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team. Volunteers need no experience with birds, just a commitment to survey a specific beach (about 3/4 mile) each month.
The next training session is from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at the Feiro Marine Life Center, 351 N. Lincoln St., Port Angeles.
There is no charge to attend a training, but plan to provide a $20 refundable deposit if you would like to take home a COASST volunteer kit complete with a COASST Beached Birds field guide. Bring a lunch or plan to buy lunch nearby.
Info meeting on school levy set
The League of Women Voters and the Sequim Senior Activity Center will co-sponsor an informational meeting about the upcoming school levy vote. It will be from 2:30-3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, at the Sequim Senior Activity Center, 921 E. Hammond St.
The Sequim School District will ask for a replacement levy to cover four years (2014-2018). The current levy expires in 2013. There is also a transportation vehicle levy to replace the aging bus fleet. This is a one-time levy which will provide transportation through 2039.
Information will be presented by Citizens for Sequim Schools.
Auditor’s office sets closures
The Clallam County Auditor’s office will be closed, along with most courthouse services, on three Mondays in January. Jan. 14 and Jan. 28 are furlough days. Jan. 21 is Martin Luther King Day, a legal holiday.
For vehicle licensing services on furlough days go to the Sequim Licensing Depot, 645 W. Washington St., Suite 2. The Sequim Licensing Depot also is open from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturdays. West End Licensing in Forks is open the two furlough days in January.

SEF challenge: Move golf balls
Registration forms and rules for the 2013 Sequim Education Foundation’s Engineering Challenge are available from science teachers in each of the Sequim School District schools and online at www.sequimeducationfoundation.org.
The challenge is to design and build a barge to carry golf balls to the end of a canal.
The competition begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23, and is hosted by the Sequim Boys & Girls Club, 400 W. Fir St.
There is a $5 entry fee; all participants receive a T-shirt.
