Clallam gets $70K from state for child care help

The Washington State Department of Commerce on Dec. 30 announced a second round in grants (about $1.8 million) to 24 organizations — including $70,000 to the Clallam County Economic Development Council for the organization’s Clallam Child Care Alliance project.

The organizations are leading collaborative efforts to expand child care capacity in communities throughout the state. Grantees will receive a little more than 38 percent of the award from state general funds administered by Commerce, and a nearly 62 percent match from donors who supported the Safe Start Fund for a Healthy Economic Transition and Recovery.

Access to affordable quality child care has been a growing challenge for the past several years, and the pandemic significantly exacerbated those problems, state officials said.

Commerce awarded $1.36 million in the first round of grants announced Sept. 10.
