Burn ban covers Clallam County

The Clallam County Burn restrictions took effect July 1 and run through Oct. 1 unless conditions warrant an earlier closure, county officials said last week.

The burn restriction applies to all outdoor burning except recreational fires used for “pleasure, religious, ceremonial, warmth, cooking or similar purposes,” county officials said. Recreational fires are permitted unless further banned by extreme weather conditions.

Recreational fires are limited to 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet in height. Fires for debris disposal are not legal under any circumstances and are not considered recreational.

If conditions arise the restrictions may be upgraded to a high fire danger, this will prohibit all outdoor burning (including recreational fires). The exception is within the Olympic National Park and other controlled campgrounds. See www.ccfd3.org or www.clallam.net for more information.

Streamkeepers seek new volunteers

Streamkeepers, Clallam County’s watershed citizen science program, is seeking new volunteers to help collect stream health data, perform data entry and analysis, and conduct education and outreach. As the program approaches its 20th year, there is a continuing need for volunteers to join existing teams gathering data and performing other stewardship activities throughout the county, program organizers say.

Streamkeepers’ annual training takes place in July and consists of three evening sessions and a field day. Trainees will learn how watersheds provide services to fish, wildlife, and people; what threatens our watersheds; and why and how Streamkeepers monitors them. No previous experience or special equipment is required.

To get involved, contact Streamkeepers at 360-417-2281 or streamkeepers@co.clallam.wa.us. Streamkeepers’ website is at http://www.clallam.net/SK/.
