Shark tales told

“The Sharks of Washington State” Feiro Speaker Series continues with a presentation from Dr. Dayv Lowry from 6-7 p.m Tuesday, June 20, at Feiro Marine Life Center, 315 N. Lincoln St. (The location changed from a notice in the June 7 Sequim Gazette). Lowry will discuss sharks that live in local waters — from the 4-foot spiny dogfish to the 32-foot basking shark — and covering their histories, value and conservation. A $5 donation is suggested. Pie social on tap at park

The Sequim Prairie Garden Club sponsors a pie social at Pioneer Memorial Park, 387 E. Washington St., Sequim, from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, June 18, for $3 a slice with ice cream with proceeds going to maintaining the park. For more information about the club, call 808-3434.

Economic team joins mayor at monthly coffee event

The City of Sequim’s Coffee with the Mayor program continues in June. Citizens can meet informally with Mayor Dennis Smith at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, June 15, at the Bell Creek Bar and Grill, 707 E. Washington St. Members of the city’s Economic Development Team will join the mayor. Smith will be at the Bell Creek Bar and Grill each month to listen to anyone who wants to chat, ask questions, express a concern or make a comment about the city or the community. Clallam County offers septic system inspection rebates

The Clallam County Environmental Health Services announces its Septic Inspection Rebate Program, offering a $100 rebate on septic system inspections and locates. The rebate is applicable for work performed from June 1-Aug. 31. Rebates are awarded on a priority-based ranking while funds last, with preference give to the Marine Recovery Area (Bagley Creek to Sequim Bay). See www.clallam.net/septic for specifics. Audubon meeting helps with ‘Gaining Global Prospective’

The Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society meets at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 21, the group’s spring potluck dinner — followed by a program at 7 p.m. — at the Dungeness River Audubon Center, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road, Sequim.

The guest speaker is Jenna Ziogas, the center’s education coordinator, who has spent the past three summers in Tanzania to lead conservation projects with high school students from all over the world. She will share stories of adventures, including climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, animal sightings, meeting Jane Goodall and lessons learned along the way. The evening is free and open to the public. Attendees are urged to bring a dish to share, a plate and utensils. Call 681-4076.

IRS scam circulating again

An IRS scam is making its rounds again in Sequim. If you receive a phone message that the IRS has an arrest warrant out for you, do not call back the number given and just delete the message. If you answer such a call, do not give out any personal information and hang up immediately. The IRS will never contact a taxpayer by phone.

Walkling trust accepting applications for grants

The Ben and Myrtle Walkling Memorial Trust is accepting applications for grants to be awarded in 2018. The trust awards grants to encourage new civic and charitable projects to benefit citizens of Port Angeles and Clallam County. For applications, send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to The Ben and Myrtle Walkling Memorial Trust, PO Box 1588, Port Angeles, WA 98362. Submit completed applications by Sept. 30. Myrtle Walkling, who died in 1992, created the trust in her will and funded it with more than $1 million.

Licensing office reduces hours

The Clallam County Auditor’s Office is changing its Department of Licensing office hours. Beginning Monday, June 19, that office will be open 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday. The change affects only the vehicle/vessel licensing office in auditor’s office in the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

All other departments within the Auditor’s Office, including recording and elections, will continue operating on the courthouse’s standard open hours of 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Clallam County’s two sub-agencies — the Sequim Licensing Depot and the West End Vehicle Licensing in Forks and — also are unaffected and will continue operating on their set hours. The Clallam County Department of Licensing provides vehicle and vessel licensing services including tab renewal, issuing license plates, replacing lost titles, transferring ownership and renewing boat registrations. Olympic UFO meeting set in Port Townsend

The next Olympic UFO Meet Up is set for 1-3 p.m. Saturday, June 17, at the Port Townsend Friends Meeting House, 1841 Sheridan Ave., Port Townsend. James Clarkson, Washington State director of the Mutual UFO Network, will present “What is UFO Reality?” Clarkson explores how UFO reality has changed during the 70 years since the advent of the modern era of UFOs.

Thrift shop open Saturday

The Sequim Dungeness Hospital Guild’s Thrift Shop, 204 W. Bell St., Sequim, will be open from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, June 17. The shop is featuring an exquisite wedding dress, veil and petticoat by ADA, a beautiful antique solid wood dining table seating 6-8 with two leaves, party dresses and unusual art work. This is in addition to summer fashions, shoes, handbags and jewelry. Puzzles, books, dishware and small appliances also are featured. All white-tagged items will be half-price. Play bunco, support hospital

Sequim Guild for Seattle Children’s Hospital is having an afternoon of playing bunco, with a lunch made by its members and a silent auction with items to bid on from noon-3 p.m. Friday, June 23, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim. Tickets are $15 at the door, doors open at 11:30 a.m. and all proceeds go to Seattle Children’s Hospital for uncompensated care. Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4:30 p.m. at the Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St., on Tuesdays-Fridays. Suggested donation is $5 (60 and over), $8 guest and a 24-hour advance reservation is needed. RSVP to 683-8491. Menus are subject to change.
