School shred event slated for Saturday

Five Acre School hosts a fundraising community shred event from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, March 20, in the JCPenney parking lot, 651 E. Washington St.

Participants can stay in their car. Volunteers unload the personal papers for shredding. No need to remove staples, paper clips or rubber bands. No cardboard, trash, CDs or DVDs can be disposed of, however.

Payment is by donation; bring cash or check, and any donation amount is appreciated. Checks can be made out to Five Acre School PSO.

Funds go to the Five Acre School Parent Service Organization.

Medical loan closet reopens for donations, returns

The Sequim Soroptimist Medical Loan Closet reopened on March 15 after the Sequim Soroptimist Board recently approved a contact-less equipment donation and return process, group members said this week.

Individuals who have contacted medical loan closet representatives prior to March 15 will be contacted by a volunteer and, on an ongoing basis, anyone who has equipment to donate or return should call 360-504-0231 and leave a message; a volunteer will set up an appointment.

Individuals who need to borrow medical equipment on a short-term basis are advised to call Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County at 360-452-1511.

The medical loan closet had been closed since Jan. 23 by order of Soroptimist International of the Americas, group representatives said; the national organization closed all in-person Soroptimist meetings, events, and community services due to concerns over the spread of COVID-19.

Cemetery commissioner meetings set

Gardiner Community Cemetery Commissioner meetings are set for the second Thursday of each month through Dec.. 9. Meetings start at 4 p.m. and are held downstairs in the Gardiner Community Church, 1040 Old Gardiner Road, Gardiner; e public is invited to attend.

County commission to consider waste plan

The Clallam County Planning Commission meets virtually/by audio at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 17.

Genealogy group resets meeting

After a glitch canceled the group’s meeting last week, the Clallam County Genealogical Society has rescheduled its March meeting for 10 a.m. Saturday, March 20 on Zoom.

Guest speaker Claudia Breland will relate what she discovered about her great-grandmother’s murder using DNA when she presents “The Murder of Rhoda Jones: Using DNA to Solve an 1883 Mystery.”

Local office open to help disabled veterans

The Disabled American Veterans (DAV) office at 583 W. Washington St. is open 10 a.m.-3 p.m. each Wednesday, to serve veterans who are needing help with claims or other information.

Services are free and veterans do not have to be members of DAV to receive assistance.

The office is by walk-in; no appointment is necessary. Masks are required upon entrance.

Quilcene rescue sets pet vaccination clinic in Sequim

Center Valley Animal Rescue of Quilcene is hosting a vaccination clinic for dogs and rabbits at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 3, at Coastal Feed and Farm Supply, 990 E. Washington St., Suite 101, Sequim.

The clinic will be conducted as a joint effort of CVAR and veterinarian Dr. Joel Cuthbert.

The clinic, hosted jointly by CVAR and veterinarian Dr. Joel Cuthbert, will allow local dog and rabbit owners the chance to get low-cost vaccinations for their pets. Vaccinations include rabbit hemorrhagic disease, rabies and DAPP.

Appointments must be made in advance, and can be made by contacting Center Valley Animal Rescue at 360-765-0598.

Dinner slated for group’s annual breakfast

The North Olympic Land Trust’s 2021 Conservation Breakfast (in the evening) is set for 6:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 7, held virtually on the organization’s Facebook page (facebook.com/northolympiclandtrust) and YouTube channel.

The event’s guest speaker is Olympic Peninsula native Cameron Macias, a graduate research assistant at the University of Idaho who has “melded her ancestral heritage, love of place, and scientific interests into the beginning of a very promising career as a scientist.”

A member of the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe, Macias grew up in Port Angeles and has been involved in multiple efforts to study the effects of dam removal and restoration on the Elwha River, including a three-year, collaborative study monitoring Elwha wildlife recolonization.

The event will also bestow the Out Standing in the Field award recipient (unidentified as of last week).

RSVPs are not required but NOLT will send out reminders, links, tips and other info to those who sing up at northolympiclandtrust.org.

Vietnam veterans event set for March 29

Members of the Michael Trebert Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution are working with Clallam County Veterans Association to hold a Vietnam War Veteran Commemoration Ceremony at 2 p.m. Monday, March 29, at the Clallam County Veteran Center, 216 S. Francis St., Port Angeles,

The service is designed to honor veterans of the Vietnam War, including prisoners of war, or missing in action, for their service and sacrifice on behalf of the United States and to thank and honor the families of these veterans.

At this special ceremony all Vietnam veterans — everyone who served on active duty between Nov. 1, 1955, and May 15, 1975, regardless of location — will be honored, along with surviving spouses and their families. Each will receive a certificate and special lapel pin.

Event organizers will be following COVID-19 guidelines by wearing face masks and social distancing at the event.

IBC offers grief classes

GriefShare, a special help meeting and support group for people experiencing grief and loss will be held at 10 a.m. on Mondays through June 7 at Independent Bible Church, 116 E. Ahlvers Road, Port Angeles.

Each weekly DVD seminar features nationally respected grief experts and real-life stories of people, followed by a small group discussion about what was viewed. GriefShare features nationally recognized experts on grief recovery topics, and attendees will find encouragement, comfort and help in grieving the death of a spouse, child, parent, sibling, other family member or friend, organizers say.

Session titles include “Is This Normal?”, “The Challenges of Grief,” “Grief and Your Relationships,” “Why?” and “Guilt and Anger.”
