Annual coat drive continues

Coats For Kids is hosting its annual coat drive, asking for contributions of new coats or shoes as well as any monetary donations, through Nov. 30.

Donation boxes are at QFC, 990 E. Washington St., Sequim, and Country Aire Natural Foods Market, 200 W. First St., in Port Angeles. In addition, Angeles Millwork & Lumber Co. (1601 S. C St., Port Angeles) and Joyce General Store (50893 US Highway 112, Port Angeles) have donation jars for the drive.

Guild’s thrift store open

Sequim Dungeness Hospital Guild Thrift Store at 204 W. Bell St. is open 10 a.m.- 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, and Friday, Oct. 30, for the final two days of the shop’s sale on red tag items (half off) and white tag items ($1 each). The store recently received a large collection of Fiesta Ware and collectibles of various kinds.

Funds raised got to support healthcare in Clallam County.

Local office open to help disabled veterans

The Disabled American Veterans office at 583 W. Washington St. is open 10 a.m.-3 p.m. each Wednesday, to serve veterans who are needing help with claims or other information.

Services are free and veterans do not have to be members of DAV to receive assistance.

The office is by walk-in; no appointment is necessary. Masks are required upon entrance.

Salal permits go on sale Nov. 4

Permit sales for salal on the Olympic National Forest begin in November.

Salal is an understory shrub commonly used in the floral industry, growing in dense thickets throughout western Washington and Oregon.

Permits will be issued from the Forks, Quinault and Quilcene offices starting at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 4. A maximum of 100 permits will be issued: 50 permits will be offered from the Quilcene office for harvest areas located within Mason County and the east side of Clallam and Jefferson counties, with 25 permits offered from Forks for the west side of Clallam County and 25 permits offered from Quinault for harvest areas within Grays Harbor County and the west side of Jefferson County.

A lottery system will be used if the demand for permits exceeds the supply. Each permit will cost $150 and can be used for up to two months.
