Support B&G clubs at auction, dinner

The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula will host its 26th annual fundraising auction and dinner at 5:30 p.m. Saturday,

Nov. 8, at the Carroll C. Kendall Unit, 400 W. Fir St., Sequim. Tickets are $125 per person and support club programs and activities in Sequim and Port Angeles.

Play area at Carrie Blake Park closed for maintenance

The playground area to the south of the entrance driveway at Carrie Blake Park is closed to replace three slides on the playground equipment and for maintenance through Oct. 24. The swings and playground equipment located on the north side of the entrance driveway still will be available for use.

Grange hosts potluck

Sequim Prairie Grange invites the public to its social night Wednesday, Oct. 22, starting with a potluck dinner at 6:30 p.m. Members of the American Legion will be guest speakers for the evening. The grange hall is at 290 Macleay Road.

Sequim for newcomers

Have you recently relocated to Sequim? Or are you considering moving to Sequim? If you answered yes to either of these questions, the New in Town Conversation is perfect for you. The Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce and Terrific-Transitions co-sponsor this event at First Federal to explore Sequim, the stresses and strains of relocation, volunteer opportunities, and much more. Fliers to meet

EAA Chapter 430 will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, in Hangar 15 at the Sequim Valley Airport. Speaker Mike Lavelle presents a program on “Going the distance — Transcontinental mail service & The Boeing model 40, Birth of the Boeing Airliners.”

Talk on whale evolution set

The Juan de Fuca Freethinkers is sponsoring a free presentation on new evidences for whale evolution by Dr. Jon Peters at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at The Landing Mall upstairs, 115 E. Railroad Ave., Port Angeles.

Square dancers hold events

The Port Angeles based Strait Wheelers will be hosting a Halloween-themed square dance at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 25 at the Sons of Norway Hall, 131 W. Fifth St., Port Angeles. Conventional square dance wear will be accepted but Halloween-themed attire is preferred. The following Saturday, Nov. 1, at 5:30 p.m. the club will be welcoming two Victoria, B.C., square dance clubs, the Mavericks and the Country Cousins, at the hall. A potluck dinner always precedes this dance. For more information, call Glen Muir at 457-3912.

Fort walk planned

Olympic Peninsula Explorers will have 5k and 10k walks, Saturday Oct. 25, in Old Fort Townsend State Park. Sign up from 9:15-9:30 a.m. at Subway, 1300 Water St., Port Townsend. You will need a Discovery Pass to park inside the park, so car pooling might be a good option. Maps of the walk will be given out at the sign-up location.

Castell to speak at guild

The Sequim Dungeness Hospital Guild will hold its monthly speaker series and guild meeting at 10 a.m. Oct. 28 in the community hall of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 Fifth Ave., Sequim. This month’s guest speaker will be Phil Castell, owner of Castell Insurance, who will discuss Medicare Part D upgrades, Medicare Advantage and changes,  new plans coming to the Affordable Care Act in 2015 and problems and deadlines involved. This speaker portion of the meeting is open to the public.

PFOA hosts dining benefit

Peninsula Friends of Animals invites the public to join members for a Dining Benefit Event at Smuggler’s Landing, 115 E. Railroad Ave., Port Angeles from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29. Half of the proceeds from all menu dinners will be donated to support the PFOA rescues. For more information, contact www.safehavenpfoa.org or 452-0414.

Trinity to host monthly dinner

 

A free community dinner will be served at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave. The meal includes baked chicken, rice, vegetables, fruit salad, desserts and beverages. Reservations, which are requested to ensure that enough food is prepared, may be made by phoning the church at 683-5367 between

9 a.m.-2 p.m. on the Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday before the dinner or by e-mail to dinners@sequimtumc.org. The church presents the dinners on the last Thursday of each month.

 

Senior Nutrition menu set

Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4:30 p.m. at Suncrest Village Retirement Apartments, 251 S. Fifth Ave. Suggested donation is $5 (60 and over), $8 guest, and a 24-hour advance reservation is needed. RSVP to 683-8491. Menus are subject to change.

Thursday, Oct. 23: Sliced tomatoes, Salisbury steak, mashed potatoes, broccoli, peach crisp

Friday, Oct. 24: Green salad, applesauce, roast pork, steamed rice, green beans, carrot cake

Monday, Oct. 27: Soup, salad, sandwich, dessert by Sinclair Place

Tuesday, Oct. 28: Spinach salad, turkey pot pie, asparagus tips, apricots

Wednesday, Oct. 29: Green salad, beefy gravy, mashed potatoes, cut corn, baked apples.


Newspapers encourage entries in costume contest

The three newspapers of the North Olympic Peninsula — Sequim Gazette, Peninsula Daily News and Forks Forum — are holding an online contest to find the best Halloween costumes on the peninsula.

Send in your photos of the scariest, silliest, cutest or most creative costume in two categories — children and adults.

There will be first-, second- and third-place winners in each of the two categories — with prizes courtesy of the contest’s sponsors. Plus the first-place winners will be published in the three newspapers.

Contest sponsors are Elwha River Casino ($25 slot card), First Federal ($25 in Port Angeles Downtown Dollars), Bedford’s Soda (an entire case of its root beer) and $25 gift certificates from William Shore Memorial Pool, Fiesta Jalisco Mexican Restaurant and Domino’s Pizza.

Trash talk comes to Sequim Library

The Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., will present “Talking Trash!” featuring Meggan Uecker, waste reduction coordinator at WSU Extension Clallam County, at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 3.

Uecker will discuss how to save energy and natural resources and reduce pollution risks and costs plus what waste reduction programs are in place and how you can participate — from surplus food donation, to composting, to gleaning, to a rural recycling initiative.
