Coffee with the mayor

Sequim residents can meet informally with Sequim mayor Dennis Smith at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, at The Oak Table Cafe, 292 W. Bell St. The mayor will be hosting monthly coffee chats, to listen to anyone who wants to chat, ask questions, express a concern or make a comment about the city or the community. Flea market set at grange

The Sequim Prairie Grange hosts a flea market from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, at 290 Macleay Road. Vendors will be in the main building as well as the outdoor kitchen and on the grounds. The grange will also offer lunch. For more information, call Bob Clark at 360-683-4431.

Guild sets bunco party

The Sequim Guild for Seattle Children’s Hospital hosts a bunco party at noon Friday, Sept. 22, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim. Tickets are $15 at the door, and includes a buffet lunch made by guild members prizes and silent auction. Proceeds go toward uncompensated care at Seattle Children’s Hospital. Learn about birds of Cuba

A noted expert on tropical birds and a lifelong teacher is the guest speaker at the next Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society meeting, set for Wednesday, Sept. 20, at the Dungeness River Audubon Center, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road in Sequim. Jim Carr, who will present “Birds of Cuba,” spent many years studying forest birds in Cuba and South America, Africa, South Asia and New Guinea. Besides knowing birds, he is an aquatic ecologist who created the widely used index of Biological Integrity, determining the health of rivers and streams by assessing fish and aquatic invertebrate populations. Carr received this year’s Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society Conservation Award. Within the past year, he traveled to Cuba to view the spectacular birds of the largest Caribbean Island.

The meeting starts with a potluck at 6 p.m. and program at 7 p.m. The potluck dinner and program are open to the public. Attendees are asked to bring a dish to share, a plate and utensils.

Exercise at library

Author Katy Bowman will discuss her book “Dynamic Aging: Simple Exercises for Whole Body Mobility,” and lead participants in introductory exercises, from 6-7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 18, at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave. Bowman’s blog, KatySays.com, reaches hundreds of thousands of people every month, and thousands have taken her live classes. Alzheimer’s walk planned

The Alzheimer’s Association’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s 2017 event is set for Sunday, Sept. 17, at the Gateway Center, 133 E. Front St., Port Angeles. Hospital guild’s thrift shop open Saturday

The Sequim Dungeness Hospital Guilds Thrift shop (204 W. Bell St.) will be open 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16. Featured this weekend will be a 68-piece set of Spode China in the Rosalie pattern, Capadomonte floral ceramic pieces and an Italian occasional chair. Also featured will be fall fashions, designer handbags, fine jewelry, kitchen appliances and dishware, book, puzzles and more. All White tagged items will be marked half-price. Motion workshop set

Sequim’s Shipley Center sets annual open house

The Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St., hosts the center’s ninth-annual Open House from 1-4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15. The event’s format allows visitors to take a guided tour from a board member or self-guided tour. With activities going on throughout the center, the open house features entertainment, refreshments, door prizes a bake sale and more. An informational presentation is set for 2 p.m. The event also is designed for members to try new activities and for newcomers to get to know more about the center. RSVP at 360-683-6806.

Strait ERN meeting set for Friday in Blyn

The next quarterly meeting of the Strait of Juan de Fuca Ecosystem Recovery Network (Strait ERN) is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15, at the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe’s Red Cedar Hall in Blyn. The Strait ERN is one of the Puget Sound Partnership’s Local Integrating Organizations who are working for Puget Sound protection and recovery. The network is a broadly-represented organization that includes tribes and local jurisdictions and most of the non-governmental organizations, educational institutions and several key business groups with interest in the Strait of Juan de Fuca Action Area. The Strait Action Area encompasses much of Clallam and Jefferson counties extending from Cape Flattery near Neah Bay east to Point Wilson in Port Townsend on the North Olympic Peninsula. New-in-town group meets Sept. 20

If you are new to Sequim or considering relocating to Sequim, the “New in Town Conversation” gathering has been designed for you. Meet other newcomers, learn more about the history of Sequim, volunteering opportunities and about how to handle the stresses and strains of relocation. Learn about 4-H

On Oct. 1, WSU Extension’s 4-H Youth Development Program will begin enrolling youth for the 2017-2018 4-H year. 4-H programs teach valuable, practical life skills through hands-on experiential learning, program organizers say.

A 4-H information gathering is set for 5-6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St. 4-H programs in Clallam and Jefferson Counties have a variety of clubs and programs led by certified adult volunteer leaders. River festival to celebrates Dungeness watershed

The Dungeness River Festival will be from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29, at Railroad Bridge Park, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road, Sequim. The U.S. Forest Service, NOAA and National Park Service are just a few of the many agencies that will be on hand to share, demonstrate and answer questions about the Dungeness River watershed and the Olympic Peninsula’s natural resources. Senior menu set

Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4:30 p.m. at the Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St., on Tuesdays-Fridays. Suggested donation is $5 (60 and over), $8 guest and a 24-hour advance reservation is needed. RSVP to 683-8491. Menus are subject to change.
