Shellfish harvesting closes along Strait

Shorelines in Clallam County are closed for recreational harvest of all species of shellfish along the Strait of Juan de Fuca, from Lyre River/Low Point east to the Jefferson County line (excluding Dungeness Bay), Clallam County Health & Human Services-Environmental Health Division officials said last week.

Sequim Bay is also closed to all species harvesting.

There are no such closures at Dungeness Bay or along the Strait of Juan de Fuca from Cape Flattery to the Lyre River/Low Point. Discovery Bay is closed to butter and varnish clams only.

All species means clams (including geoduck), oysters, mussels and other invertebrates such as the moon snail. These closures do not apply to shrimp.

Audubon society meeting is Sept. 19

The Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society meets for a potluck dinner at 6 p.m. and program at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19, at the Dungeness River Audubon Center, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road.

The program is free and open to the public. Potluck attendees are asked to bring a dish to share and your own plate and utensils.

Guest Judy Larimore presents, “My Favorite Birds of California, Mexico, and Sequim: Herons, Egrets, Pelicans and More.”

An avid photographer since she was 12, Larimore has photographs in several private collections including the Indonesian Embassy in Washington D.C., the Hewlett Packard Corporate headquarters and the Monterey Beach Hotel. Five of her photos appear in a new book, “Art State: Washington” that highlights 33 artists in Washington state. One of her photos shows the Dungeness River in Sequim, where she has lived for the last 16 years.

While living and traveling in California and Mexico, Larimore photographed a variety of birds, including the stately herons, flashy egrets and pelicans.

Fundraisers set for Sequim Community Aid

Sequim Community Aid, a nonprofit in the community helping residents with utility bills, rent deposits and more for more than 70 years, is taking part in a pair of fundraisers thanks to two local businesses this month.

From 8-11 a.m. and 1-5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 20, Black Bear Diner, 1471 E. Washington St., donates 15 percent of food and beverages purchased to the organization. There will also be raffle tickets for a chance to win a hand-made quilt, a Starbucks gift basket and homemade jams and jellies.

In addition, WeDo Fudge, 11 Valley Center Place, is donating a portion of all sales to Sequim Community Aid.

Commission to consider zoning amendments

The Clallam County Planning Commission will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles; enter via the after-hours public meeting entrance from Fourth Street.

The agenda includes a Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe application for a zoning map amendment of about 4.9 acres near Zaccardo Road from Rural Low to Public Land zoning, and Clallam County’s application for a zoning map amendment for property in the Port Angeles Urban Growth Area from Urban Low Density to Public Land zoning.

Night out for mom, dad

Clallam Parent to Parent, a support group for parents raising children with special needs, is sponsoring a Parents Night Out beginning at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, at the Sergio’s Hacienda, 205 E. Eighth St., Port Angeles.

This group is “a caring, supporting opportunity to discuss and share information about dealing with difficult parenting situations, further advocacy for your child, how to obtain respite for yourself and find support for emotional and self care issues,” organizers say.

Bunco fundraiser set in Sequim

Sequim Guild of Seattle Children’s hospital is sponsoring its September BUNCO Party from noon-3 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 21, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 N. 5th Ave. Participants can win prizes playing Bunco, enjoy a lunch made by guild members and bid on items at a silent auction.

All proceeds go to Seattle Children’s Hospital for uncompensated care.

Cost is $15 at the door; doors open at 11:30 a.m.

Birding field trip set in Sequim

Join local bird enthusiasts for a walk at the Railroad Bridge Park in Sequim at a “Fall Birding for Beginners and Newcomers,” set for 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, outside the Dungeness River Audubon Center, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road.

All levels of birders are welcome, and the field trip is free. Attendees are encouraged to bring binoculars; some may be available to borrow.

Diabetes support group

Olympic Medical Center hosts a diabetes support group meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, at Seasons Café at Olympic Memorial Hospital, 939 Caroline St., Port Angeles. Marge Stewart of the Port Angeles Senior Center presents “Getting the Benefits to Manage Diabetes.”

Fairview grange hosts dinner, auction

Fairview Grange hosts a spaghetti dinner and Chinese dessert auction starting at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, at 161 Lake Farm Road between Sequim and Port Angeles.

Cost is $10 all you can eat with children under 12 admitted free. The dinner includes all the spaghetti, bread, salad and ice cream you can eat; water and coffee are served as well.

Event organizers are seeking more desserts for the auction, which starts at 6 p.m.

The grange group is looking to raise fund for a new septic system.

Volunteers sought for CrabFest

There are plenty of volunteer positions still open for the 2018 Dungeness Crab & Seafood Festival, set for Oct. 5-7 in Port Angeles.

Volunteers are needed for the information/merchandise booth, the Grab-A-Crab Derby, for crab sales, crab feed line control, greeting attendees, diner assistance (table clean-up, etc.), car sales, set-up and cleaning.

Helpers receive a Crab Crew T-shirt, and those who work two or more four-hour shifts during the weekend receive a certificate for a half-crab dinner.

A volunteer training is set for 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, in the Crab Central tent in the Red Lion Hotel parking lot, 221 N. Lincoln St., Port Angeles.

Free dinner scheduled at Trinity United

A free community dinner will be served at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave.

The meal includes meatballs, potatoes, vegetables, carrot salad, dessert and beverages.

Veterans event slated for Sept. 27

Assured Hospice of Clallam and Jefferson Counties hosts a free educational presentation, “Better Serving Those Who Served” from 9 a.m.-noon on Thursday, Sept. 27, at Linkletter Hall at Olympic Memorial Hospital, 939 Caroline St., Port Angeles. The guest speaker is Dr. Peter Schmidt of the Washington Department of Veterans Affairs.

Fundraiser features public lands commissioner

Hilary Franz, Washington State’s 14th Commissioner of Public Lands, is keynote speaker for the Clallam County Democratic Party 2018 annual fundraiser, the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Dinner and Silent Auction, set for Saturday, Sept. 29, at 7 Cedars Casino’s Club 7, 270756 US Highway 101, Blyn.

Franz will speak on “strengthening our lands and rural communities.” She administers the state Department of Natural Resources and its 1,500 employees, directs management of more than 5.6 million acres of state-owned lands, supervises wildfire protection state and private forest lands and chairs the state’s Board of Natural Resources and the Forest Practices board.

Stand Down set for Oct. 4

The Voices for Veterans Stand Down, an event to provide resources and information to veterans, is set for 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, at the Clallam County Fairgrounds, 1608 W. 16th St., Port Angeles.

The event provides hot meals — both breakfast and lunch — and looks to connect veterans with medical/dental screening, screening information for colon and breast cancer, housing information, employment and education, veteran benefits, counseling, legal aid, haircuts, food, pet supplies, new clothing and more.

Free transportation is available on Clallam and Jefferson Transit buses.

The event is also a day for community members to stop by to say “thank you” to veterans.

This one-day operation is offered in May, July and October. All funding is received through donations and grants.
