Here are several happenings in the Sequim area this week and next.

Gardiner Garden Club meets

The Gardiner Garden Club next meets from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, at 980 Old Gardiner Road, Gardiner. Its first goal is to fundraise for scholarships to the students of Sequim High School. It meets monthly from September to April. Dues are $10 per year.

Diabetes screening set

On Saturday, Sept. 13, Peninsula College nursing students will join volunteers and staff from the Volunteers in Medicine of the Olympics Clinic to provide screening for diabetes risk at the Port Angeles Farmers Market from noon-2 p.m.

The market is at the Gateway Pavilion in downtown Port Angeles. For more information, contact Zoe Apisdorf, VIMO development coordinator, at 457-4431.

Library book sale on tap

Friends of the Sequim Library will have its monthly book sale from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 13, behind the library at 630 N. Sequim Ave. Featured items include hundreds of DVDs and the International Collectors’ Library of Classics.

Monday Musicale meets

Monday Musicale will meet Monday, Sept. 15, at Queen of Angels Fellowship Hall, 209 W. 11th St., Port Angeles. The noon meeting will be followed by entertainment at 1 p.m., open to the public. The group’s objective is to encourage music study in schools. Call Ruth Welch, 457-5223, for reservations and more information.

Support groups meet at OMC

Olympic Medical Cancer Center offers the following cancer support groups: 1-2:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 15 — Look Good, Feel Better, OMCC Conference Room, third Monday of the month, attendees must register by calling the patient navigator at 582-2845; 1-2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23 — Women’s Cancer Support Group, Women’s Cancer Support Group, OMCC library.

Shelter Providers to meet

The Shelter Providers Network of Clallam County will meet from 9-10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, in Holy Trinity Lutheran Church’s downstairs fellowship hall, 301 Lopez Ave., Port Angeles. Open house at Shipley Center

In recognition of National Senior Center Month, the Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St., Sequim, will have an open house from 1-4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18. There will be entertainment, refreshments, free door prizes, information, tours and demonstrations. The public is invited to attend.

NAMI meets at OMC

The NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Clallam County Affiliate meeting on Thursday, Sept. 18, is open to all family members and friends of adults and children who live with mental illness. Anyone who is interested in mental illness  also is invited. The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at Olympic Medical Center, 939 Caroline St., in the Linkletter Room downstairs.

The scheduled program will begin at 7 p.m. and consists of several board of directors sharing their experience and gained knowledge at the recent Washington State Conference held in Vancouver in August.

Agency offers parenting classes

First Step Family Support Center is offering “Make Parenting a Pleasure” classes. This program series is for parents with children ages birth-3.

Class attendees are provided with many helpful tools to assist them in being successful and patient parents. Participants will enjoy food and make connections with other families. On-site child care and transportation are provided. Classes are free to interested parents and start Tuesday, Sept. 16, from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and run for 12 weeks. The classes are at First Step Family Support Center, 323 E. Sixth St., Port Angeles.

Park asks for input on goat plan

With less than two weeks left in the 60-day public scoping period Olympic National Park’s Mountain Goat Management Plan, Superintendent Sarah Creachbaum invites interested members of the public to review the information and preliminary alternative concepts at www.parkplanning.nps.gov/olymgoat and provide comments and suggestions. The public comment period will end on Sept. 19. More information, the purpose and need for the plan, the plan’s objectives and preliminary alternative concepts developed so far, can be found online at www.parkplanning.nps.gov/olymgoat.

Walk to end Alzheimer’s

The 2014 Walk to End Alzheimer’s, North Olympic Peninsula chapter, will be Saturday, Sept. 27, beginning with registration at 9:30 a.m. at the Boys & Girls Club, 400 W. Fir St., Sequim. The ceremony begins at 11 a.m. and the route is 2 miles.

Help sought for trail work

Thanks to a $50,000 grant from the Washington’s National Park Fund, the Olympic National Park trail crew is spending September repairing and improving trails in the Hurricane Ridge area and volunteers are needed.

Trails targeted for work include the Grand Valley, Klahhane Ridge, Switchback, Elk Mountain and Badger Valley trails.

Volunteer for coast cleanup

The Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary and Washington CoastSavers are encouraging visitors to register for the International Coastal Cleanup on Sept. 20 and add to their visit by experiencing the Olympic coast.

Volunteers for the cleanup event may select from dozens of beaches to clean, from the Long Beach Peninsula to the Olympic Peninsula. The CoastSavers website, www.coastsavers.org, has information about how to register, what beaches will be cleaned, where to camp and special offers through local business specifically for cleanup volunteers. Local businesses are offering discounts for lodging, restaurants and activities for those who participate.

Senior Nutrition menu set

Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4:30 p.m. at Suncrest Village Retirement Apartments, 251 S. Fifth Ave. Suggested donation is $5 (60 and over), $8 guest, and a 24-hour advance reservation is needed. RSVP to 683-8491. Menus are subject to change.

Thursday, Sept. 11: Green salad, cottage cheese, chicken noodle soup, biscuit, baked apples

Friday, Sept. 12: Spinach salad, poached fish, sweet potatoes, broccoli, carrot cake
