City council welcomes new student liaison
The Sequim City Council welcomed student liaison Emily Straling to her first meeting on Monday, Sept. 12. Straling is a senior at Sequim High School, where she is taking Advance Placement and leadership classes, is captain of the basketball team and serves on the cheerleader squad. The student liaison position was created by the city council in 2016 as a way to obtain input from students on various issues.

Movie about climate change scheduled for Sept. 21
A free screening of “How To Let Go of the World and Love All the Things Climate Can’t Change” will be from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, at the Elwha Klallam Heritage Center, 401 W. First St., Port Angeles. The movie is a deeply personal movie by Oscar-nominated director Josh Fox. The event is sponsored by Olympic Climate Action.
OPA students putting on car wash fundraiser
Olympic Peninsula Academy will have a fundraising car wash from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturdays, Sept. 24 and Oct. 8, at the JCPenney parking lot in Sequim. These funds will go to help with field trips, getting updated educational materials, special programs such as Destination Imagination, Future City and the school’s drama play. Car washes are by donation.
Commission to discuss areas code amendments
The Clallam County Planning Commission meets at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles. The agenda includes proposed amendments to the Clallam County Critical Areas Code related to existing, ongoing agriculture alternative development standards and related definitions. Learn about ‘Klallam Territory’
A “Welcome to Klallam Territory” presentation will kick off the fall 2016 school year at Peninsula College, with a presentation from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, in the Peninsula College Little Theater, with a reception immediately following in conference room J-47 in the Pirate Union Building. All tribal members and the general public are invited to attend this free event together with the college community. The reception will include presentation posters on Klallam villages’ history created last year by Jamie Valadez’s high school students. Horsemanship classes set for veterans
Veterans who love horses are invited to register for a free, six-week Horsemanship for Heroes pilot program set to begin Thursday, Sept. 22, at Heron Pond Farm, 152 Douglas Road in Port Townsend. Three, one-hour classes with four students each will run from 10-11:15 a.m., 11:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m. and 1-2:15 p.m. The program is offered by Camp Beausite NW in partnership with Jefferson Equestrian Association, with instructors who are certified by the Professional Association for Therapeutic Horsemanship. Free entry at state parks
The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission is offering a free day on Saturday, Sept. 24, in recognition of National Public Lands Day. Day-use visitors will not need a Discover Pass to visit state parks. The Discover Pass still is required to access lands managed by WDFW and DNR. Free days apply only to day-use access by vehicle, not overnight stays or rented facilities. Washington State Parks will have one more free day in 2016: Friday, Nov. 11, in honor of Veterans Day.
Fire District 3 presents earthquake survival info
The Sequim Dungeness Hospital Guild resumes its monthly speaker series and business meetings at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, in the community hall of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth Ave. in Sequim.
The public always is invited to the first portion of this meeting featuring guest speakers. This month Chief Dan Orr of Clallam County Fire District 3 and Blaine Zechanelly presents information on a personal plan to survive and live following a Cascadia Subduction earthquake. Since people would be cut off for possibly 30 days or more, it is vital to get this needed information. Following their presentation will be a short recess before the regular guild business meeting.
Learn genealogy basics
The Clallam County Genealogical Society presents “Introduction to the Basics of Genealogical Research” and how to utilize the subscription databases available at its research library from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24. Sequim grange hosting pancake breakfast
Sequim Prairie Grange members will serve a pancake breakfast from 7:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25. In addition to pancakes, the menu includes ham, eggs and beverages. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children under the age 10. The proceeds will go toward the maintenance of the building and other Grange activities. The Grange Hall is at 290 Macleay Road.
Veterans invited to barbecue
Camp Beausite Northwest will hold a free Appreciation Barbecue and Concert by Lobo Del Mar, for veterans and their families in Clallam and Jefferson counties, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25, at Camp Beausite, 510 Beausite Lake Road, Chimacum. Food will be provided by the local Elks Club and served by volunteers with Peninsula and Port Townsend Kiwanis Club members.
State trust land meetings set
The Washington State School Directors’ Association Trust Land Task Force hosts three presentations regarding how Washington state trust lands are managed and the impact to local schools on Tuesday, Sept. 27.

Blood drive set at PUD office
In recognition of National Preparedness Month, Clallam County Public Utility District No. 1 is hosting a public blood donation drive from 9-11 a.m. and noon-3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, at the Carlsborg Main Office, 104 Hooker Road.
Schedule an appointment at 800-398-7888 ext. 2. Scheduling your appointment in advance is highly encouraged because participants get priority over walk-ins. If demand is high, Bloodworks Northwest — the group providing the blood drive service — can plan in advance to add additional staff and appointments.
Trinity United hosting community meal
A free community dinner will be served at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave.
The meal includes baked ham, beans, vegetables, fruit salad, dessert and beverages. Reservations are required and may be made by calling the church at 683-5367 between 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on the Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday before the dinner or by email to dinnerstumc@aol.com.
The church presents the dinners on the last Thursday of each month.
Film on ocean noise planned
The Peninsula College’s Magic of Cinema and the Sierra Club North Olympic Group are screening “Sonic Sea,” a documentary highlighting the harmful effects of human-made noise pollution in the oceans. The event is at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, in the Peninsula College Little Theater. “Sonic Sea” documents how vessel traffic and other human induced noise impacts whales, dolphins and other sea life. Learn ways ocean sounds can change to lower the impacts.
‘Things to Do in Sequim’ event set for Oct. 1

VHOCC offers training
Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County is offering a free six-week series on Community Education and Volunteer Training in Port Angeles, from Oct. 5-Nov. 9, each Wednesday from 6-8 p.m., at the Hospice House, 810 Albert St. in Port Angeles. The series provides a history and overview of hospice, explores grief and the dying process, and offers basic volunteer training for those interested. Enter fair theme contest
Oct. 1 is the deadline to enter the theme contest for the 2017 Clallam County Fair.
If your theme is picked by the selection committee, you will win $100, two fair day passes and two fair T‑shirts. The theme is limited to seven words or less. You cannot use “Clallam County” in the slogan. Ten entries per person are allowed. Each entry must have the entrant’s name, address and phone number. Only residents of Clallam County are eligible to enter and there is no age limit.
Mail your suggested theme to the Clallam County Fair Theme Committee, 1608 W. 16th St., Port Angeles, WA 98363. Entries must be postmarked no later than Oct. 1.
Ferguson is keynote speaker
Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson will keynote the 2016 Franklin & Eleanor Dinner on Saturday, Oct. 8, hosted by the Clallam County Democrats. The dinner will be held at the Seven Cedars Casino – Club Seven in Blyn. A meet and greet will start at 4 p.m. and the dinner and program will begin at 5:30 p.m.

Town hall set on Alzheimer’s
