Sequim school assemblies to honor veterans

Community members are invited to attend an assembly honoring veterans of the Armed Forces at 8:20 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, at Sequim Middle School, 301 W. Hendrickson Road. Plan to arrive a few minutes early and stop in at the main office to sign in before proceeding to the gym, where the assembly will be held. Sequim High School invites all military members, active duty or retired, to Veterans Day assembly from 10:30-11:15 a.m. Monday, Nov. 7, at the school gym, 601 N. Sequim Ave. A short reception follows. For more about this event, call 582-3600.

Sequim Prairie Grange sets pancake breakfast

Sequim Prairie Grange members will serve a pancake breakfast from 7:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6. In addition to pancakes, the menu includes ham, eggs and a beverage. Cost is $5 for adults, $3 for children under the age 10. Proceeds will go toward the maintenance of the building and other grange activities. The Sequim Prairie Grange is at 290 Macleay Road.

Scouts host Applebee’s fundraiser breakfast

Scouts from Troop 1498 will be hosting a pancake breakfast at Applebee’s from 8-10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 5. Tickets may be purchased at the door for just $10/person. The breakfast includes pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon, juice, coffee, tea, butter and syrup. Applebee’s staffers do the cooking while the Scouts do wait staff duties and greeting. Money raised help Scouts travel to the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico in June of 2017. Each Scout is working to raise $1,900 for the 15-day trip. Port Angeles robotics club opens enrollment

Feiro Marine Life Center and NOAA’s Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary have opened enrollment for the fall semester of underwater robotics club. The six-week program runs Wednesdays from 3:30-5 p.m. beginning today — Wednesday, Nov. 2. New members are encouraged, particularly students in grades 6-9, though any student is welcome to join.

Each session focuses on a different aspect of designing and building a remotely operated vehicle.

Free parks day on tap

In honor of Veterans Day, Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission is offering a free day on Friday, Nov. 11. Day-use visitors will not need a Discover Pass to visit state parks. Free days apply only to day-use access by vehicle, not overnight stays or rented facilities. State Parks free days are in keeping with legislation that created the Discover Pass, a $30 annual or $10 one-day permit required on lands managed by Washington State Parks and the Washington departments of Natural Resources and Fish & Wildlife.

Hospital Guild thrift shop is open Saturday

The Sequim Dungeness Hospital Guild’s thrift shop, at 204 W. Bell St., will be open 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5. The shop has holiday decorations, furniture and living room accessories, designer handbags, shoes, fine jewelry and scarves and special pieces of dishware for holiday meals. All white-tagged items will be marked half-price. Volunteers and consignors always are wanted. Call 683-7044 for information.

Community Coffee Chat set with superintendent

A community coffee chat with Sequim school superintendent Gary Neal will be held from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, at Scooters Coffee, 649 W. Washington St. Community members are invited to meet the superintendent and take part in informal conversation on educational topics.

County planning commission considers comp plan changes

The Clallam County Planning Commission meets at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

The agenda includes a work session item regarding draft updates to the Clallam County Comprehensive Plan, including proposed amendments to the comprehensive plan land use map and zoning map for the 560-acre Carlsborg Urban Growth Area.

Extra fruit can help the hungry in Clallam County

Is your fruit dropping? Dan Littlefield at the WSU Clallam County Extension says his office still is seeing apples and pears around the county ready to be picked. Community members who have or know of those who have fruit not being picked are encouraged to call the WSU Extension office to have volunteer gleaners pick the fruit, bring it to local food banks and take some home for themselves.

State: Studded tires OK

The Washington Department of Transportation announced last week studded tires are legal for use through March 31.

Motorists are encouraged to visit a tire dealer to learn more about traction tires that are legal for year-round use.

Motorists purchasing studded tires this year will notice a new $5 per tire fee enacted by the Legislature on all new studded tire purchases. Money collected goes to the state motor vehicle fund for roadway work.

Upgrades shut down Port Townsend-Coupeville ferry

Seismic upgrades to the Coupeville ferry terminal will temporarily suspend service on the Port Townsend/Coupeville route Saturday, Nov. 5, and Sunday, Nov. 6. Sailings between Port Townsend and Coupeville are scheduled to resume at 6:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 7.

Last month, Washington State Ferries began work to make eight, in-water columns at the Coupeville ferry terminal safer in an earthquake.

Set Nov. 12 to mark Marine Corps anniversary

The Mt. Olympus Det. 897 of Sequim/Port Angeles, invites all armed forces veterans, their families and guests to celebrate the 241st anniversary of the Marine Corps at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Sequim Elks Lodge, 143 Port Williams Road, Sequim.

The dinner and ceremony begin at 6:30 p.m. — the cost is $35 per person. The deadline for reservations is Monday, Nov. 7.

Fundraising concert in Tacoma features Thomas

Multi-award award-winning pianist and composer Jennifer Thomas of Sequim is headlining a fundraising concert to benefit local music charities at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, at Christ Episcopal Church, 310 North K St., Tacoma.

She will be joined by pianist Kelsey Keogh, violinist Kelley Johnson, cellist Jeanee Maucotel, flutist Rose Johnson, soprano Erin Guinup and 22 choir members from Ensign Symphony Chorus.

All proceeds from this concert benefit Sigma Alpha Iota philanthropies supporting local music ensembles and international efforts in music.
