US Highway 101 signs honor local sports heroes

The Sequim Schools Alumni Association and Sequim Pioneer members worked together to purchase U.S. Highway 101 signs in honor of outstanding local athletes.

Both Joe Rantz (1936, rowing) and Matt Dryke (1984, skeet shooting) are Olympic Games gold medal champions.

The two signs recently were installed by the Washington State Department of Transportation on the east end (near Whitefeather Way) and west end (near the elk statue) of Sequim.

 

County commission to talk shoreline update

The Clallam County Planning Commission meets at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

Agenda items include a review of the Draft 2014 Shoreline Master Program Update.

Workshop on horse grazing set for April 20

Dr. Tara Black, with Sequim Animal Hospital, and the Conservation District are partnering to offer a free workshop on safely grazing horses on spring pastures. Attendees also will tour a local horse farm with mud-free paddocks, healthy pastures and productive hayfields.

The free workshop will be from 3-4:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, at a horse farm in the Agnew area.

Sequim garden club sale slated for April 23

 

The Sequim Prairie Garden Club has its annual spring garden sale from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, April 23, at Pioneer Memorial Park, 387 E. Washington St., Sequim. This is SPGC’s main fundraiser of the year to help maintain and beautify

Sequim’s own downtown garden park. There will be hundreds of vegetable starts, annuals, perennials, shrubs and more.

The Garden Shed is back with outdoor garden art and there will be raffles and a bake sale.

Presentation on VA benefits set at Shipley Center

The Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St., Sequim, will host the local VFW and Fleet Reserve Service Office, at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 26, for a presentation on VA Benefits such as compensation and benefits, health benefits, Choice Program and Veterans Service Office responsibility.

There will be open discussion time for questions and answers from attendees. This is a free event, open to the public and all ages, registration is not required. For more information, call 683-6806.


Rosales to speak to guild

The Sequim Dungeness Hospital Guild will hold its monthly speaker series and business meeting at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 26, in the community hall of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church , 525 N. Fifth Ave. in Sequim.

The guest speaker is Steve Rosales, director of the Sequim Food Bank. The public is invited to this portion of the meeting.

A short recess will follow Rosales’ talk followed by the regular business meeting. Coffee and light refreshments will be served.

Trinity dinner on tap

A free community dinner will be served at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 28, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave. The meal includes Chef Carl’s special meatloaf and gravy, mashed potatoes, vegetables, green salad, dessert and beverages.

Reservations, which are strongly encouraged to ensure that enough food is prepared, may be made by calling 683-5367 between 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on the Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday before the dinner or by email to dinners@sequimtumc.org.

The church presents the dinners on the last Thursday of each month.


PA plant sale planned

The Port Angeles Garden Club’s 25th Annual Spring Plant Sale will be from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, April 30, at the Port Angeles Senior Center, 328 E. Seventh St., featuring perennials, bulbs, trees, shrubs, berries, houseplants and tomato starts.

There also will be raffles. All proceeds support scholarships for local high school and community colleges, civic beautification, community donations and other local programs.

DIY car care help available

April is National Car Care Month and all month long the North Olympic Library System will be highlighting ChiltonLibrary, an online automotive repair resource library patrons can access throughout the year from a NOLS or home computer simply by visiting www.nols.org.

ChiltonLibrary helps do-it-yourselfers of all skill levels save money on vehicle repairs by offering expert step-by-step guidance as well as price estimates. Troubleshooting guides that include diagnostic trouble codes, photos, illustrations, diagrams, and multimedia (videos and animations) help simplify even the most complicated tasks.


DSHS at food bank

The Department of Social and Health Services mobile unit will be at the Sequim Food Bank, 144 W. Alder St., Sequim, from 8:30 a.m.-noon Friday, May 6.

Attendees can apply for cash assistance, basic food assistance and medical assistance. You also can drop off paperwork, complete an eligibility review, mid-certification review or make changes to an existing case.


Yacht club festivities set

The Sequim Bay Yacht Club will mark its annual opening day with a ceremony and open house beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 7, at John Wayne Marina, 2577 West Sequim Bay Road, Sequim. From 10 a.m.-1 p.m. there will be free sailboat, kayak and paddle board rides.

The opening day ceremony is at 1:30 p.m. and a boat parade is at 2 p.m. The public is invited.

Shipley to host open house

May is National Older Americans Month and the Shipley Center is hosting its eighth annual open house, set for 1-4 p.m. Tuesday, May 10. The event includes entertainment, refreshments, door prizes, demonstrations, information about the center and a bake sale.

All proceeds from the bake sale go to the center.

The North Peninsula Building Association will have its annual free Builders Surplus Sale from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, May 14, at the Clallam County Fairgrounds.

Find new and re-usable building materials for the home and garden.

 

Get tickets for Kiwanis raffle

Tickets are now on sale for the Kiwanis Club of Port Angeles annual Kiwanis/Key Club raffle. Prizes are two Samsung Galaxy tablets. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at Wenner-Davis & Associates, 102 E. First St., in downtown Port Angeles. Tickets also can be purchased from any Kiwanis Club of Port Angeles member and can be purchased between now and May 15.

The drawing will be May 15 at the Annual Kiwanis Garage Sale.

Proceeds help support the Kiwanis Club of Port Angeles and the PAHS Key Club. The club supports many community events and organizations, including Camp Beausite, Dream Playground, YMCA, college-bound Port Angeles High School seniors and the Back to School Event.


Free fishing for youths

The Puget Sound Anglers, North Olympic Peninsula Chapter, the City of Sequim and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife sponsor the free Kids Fishing Day, set for Saturday, May 21, at the Carrie Blake Park pond. The event runs 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Youths 14 and younger can fish and retain two trout each. Gear, bait, cleaning and icing are provided. There also is a “little tots” pond for the 4 and younger crowd. Refreshments of hot dogs and soda are available for purchase.


Tickets available for Serenity House fundraiser

Serenity House of Clallam County will have an art auction fundraiser and a 10-Year Plan Celebration beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 21, at The Cedars at Dungeness, 1965 Woodcock Road, Sequim.

The event’s speakers are Lynda Day George and Sen. Mark Miloscia and the theme is “The Art of Ending Homelessness.” Dinner tickets are $50 per plate and are available at Serenity thrift store in Sequim and Port Angeles, by calling 452-7224 or at serenityhouseclallam.org/donate.html.

 

Senior Nutrition menu set

Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4:30 p.m. at the Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Suggested donation is $5 (60 and over), $8 guest and a 24-hour advance reservation is needed. RSVP to 683-8491. Menus are subject to change.
