Young Eagles fly; be a backyard scientist; afternoon of fun to help children; Olympian’s daughter to share memories, more

Young Eagles fly

EAA Chapter 430 offers free Young Eagles flights for youth ages 8-17 to give them the opportunity to experience what real pilots do on the ground and in the air from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, June 11, weather permitting.

Parents need to be present to sign permission forms, available at the Young Eagles sign-in tent located west of the terminal at Fairchild International Airport, Port Angeles.

 

Carrying the torch

In support of Special Olympics Washington, Sequim Police officers were among many members of the criminal justice field from local, state, federal and tribal agencies that volunteered to participate in the relay race last week.

From one volunteer to the next the torch was handed off and run from Laird’s Corner west of Port Angeles to Joint Base Lewis McChord for the Special Olympics Washington 2016 Summer Games. Arrival of the Flame of Hope marked the opening ceremony and beginning of the games held June 3-5.

 

Be a backyard scientist

Learn how to be a scientist in your own backyard at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave. On Saturday, June 11, the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture will present a special educational program for families and children ages 3-5 that’s all about nature, bugs, plants and animals.

Drop in anytime between 11 a.m.-1 p.m. to make pollinator puppets, solve habitat mysteries and play nature-themed games.

This free event is the second in a series of Burke Museum programs geared toward children under the age of 5 and offered at the North Olympic Library System.

 

Afternoon of fun to help children

The Sequim Guild will have a fundraising event with bunco, lunch, a cookbook sale and silent auction at noon Friday, June 17, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. The cost is $15 (checks or cash only, no credit cards). All proceeds go to Seattle Children’s Hospital uncompensated care fund.


Olympian’s daughter to share memories

Judy Rantz Willman will return to Sequim with more stories and photos of her father’s life, discussing Joe Rantz’ involvement in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. Against all odds, the University of Washington team won the gold medal in rowing.

Willman will be at the Dungeness Schoolhouse at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, June 12, for her presentation and will answer questions from the audience. She is doing this as a fundraising event for the Sequim Museum to support ongoing history education programs. Sequim High School students are reading “Boys in the Boat” in their English classes.

The schoolhouse is at 2781 Towne Road near the Dungeness River Bridge. A $5 donation is suggested.

 

OPAS June 15 meeting features biologist

The Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 15, at the Dungeness River Audubon Center, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road in Sequim, for a potluck dinner and meeting.

The presentation will be given by Dr. Julia Parrish, executive director and one of the founders of COASST, Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team, and is a professor at the University of Washington, specializing in seabird biology, coastal ecosystem health and marine conservation. OPAS also will have officer elections and present annual awards.

Bring a dish to share and your own plate and utensils.


Sign up for Habitat tour

Habitat for Humanity of Clallam County will have a Hearts & Homes Tour from 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 18, to show participants the results of its work in Sequim and Port Angeles. The free tour is open to the public but bus seats are limited to 40. Lunch will be provided.

Meet at the southeast corner of the Sequim Walmart parking lot to board the tour minivan.

Stock up on mysteries, history books at sale

The Friends of Sequim Library will hold its monthly book sale from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, June 11, behind the Sequim Library at 630 N.

Sequim Ave. This month there is a complete, 21-volume set of Janet Evanovich (Stephanie Plum), Simon Brett (Detective Charles Paris), and George C. Chesbro (investigator Mongo) mysteries.

There have been large recent donations of popular fiction on CDs and cassettes as well as many DVD movies. For the model railroad enthusiast, there are many back issues of Narrow Gauge and Shortline Gazette magazines.

 

B&G hosts free summer meals through program

The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula will continue its free summer lunch program from noon-1 p.m. Mondays-Fridays from June 16-Aug. 26. A free breakfast only at the club is from 8-9 a.m.

All Sequim youths ages 1-18 are invited. In Sequim, the meals will be served at the Boys & Girls Club, Carrie Blake Park, Elk Creek Apartments and Mountain View Apartments.


Ice cream social set

The Shipley Center (921 E. Hammond St.) hosts an ice cream social, set for 1 p.m. Friday, June 17.

The social, sponsored by Park View Villas, is $5 for Shipley Center members and $7 for non-members.

Meet with the mayor

The City of Sequim Coffee with the Mayor program continues in June. Sequim residents can meet informally with Mayor Dennis Smith, at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, June 16, at the Bell Creek Bar and Grill, 707 E. Washington St. Community Development Director Chris Hugo will join the mayor.

Smith will be at a different published location each month to listen to anyone who wants to chat, ask questions, express a concern or make a comment about the City or the community.

Pie fundraiser in park

The Sequim Prairie Garden Club will have its first “Old-Fashioned Pie Social” from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, June 12, in Pioneer Park, 387 E. Washington St., Sequim. Bring your family and enjoy the beauty of nature and spend just $2 per slice.

Senior menu set

Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4:30 p.m. at the Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Suggested donation is $5 (60 and over), $8 guest and a 24-hour advance reservation is needed. RSVP to 683-8491.

Menus are subject to change.
