Navy vessels collide in strait

The ballistic-missile submarine USS Louisiana and a U.S. Navy Offshore Support Vessel collided while conducting routine operations in the Strait of Juan de Fuca off the coast of Washington at 6 p.m. Aug. 18. There were no injuries to personnel. Assessments of the damage to both the submarine and the U.S. Navy Offshore Support Vessel are being conducted. The incident is under investigation.

Both ships returned safely to port under their own power. The U.S. Navy Offshore Support Vessel returned safely to port at Port Angeles and the USS Louisiana returned safely to homeport at Naval Base Kitsap Bangor.

Clothing giveaway at church

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 815 W. Washington St., Sequim, is having a free clothing giveaway of new and used clothing from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27. The items all will be in wearable condition for men, women and children. Come early for the best selection.

Clallam County planners set public hearing

The Clallam County Planning Commission has scheduled a public hearing regarding amendments to the Clallam County Critical Areas code. The hearing is set for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, in Room 160 of the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles

The hearing will include consideration of alternate standards for existing and ongoing agriculture zones within the jurisdiction of Aquatic Habitat Conservation Areas (i.e streams, rivers, and marine waters) and wetlands. The Planning Commission will forward recommendations to the Board of Clallam County Commissioners for consideration and further action; interested parties are invited to attend the hearing and contribute comments. Identity theft is topic

The Newcomers Club lunch meeting at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, will feature Lisa Meyer, assistant vice president and marketing manager for the Peninsula District of US Bank. She will talk about identity theft and financial frauds and their effects on older Americans. The meeting is at The Cedars at Dungeness, 1965 Woodcock Road, Sequim. Pet Day at park

KSQM 91.5 is hosting the annual Pet Day event from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10. Come out to Carrie Blake Park, 202 N. Blake Ave., Sequim, to celebrate all of your pet family members with the local businesses that help care for them. There will be information on pet boarding and grooming services, to handmade treats and accessories all while listening to the KSQM’s music.

Fun walk set for Sept. 10

The Dungeness Valley Health and Wellness Clinic will hold its 12th annual Fun Walk at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, starting at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 Blake Ave., in Sequim.

Registration ($10 per adult, free for those under 18) opens at 8:30 a.m. for individuals, families and teams who choose to walk or run either the 1-mile or the 5-mile course through Carrie Blake Park, the Water Reuse Demonstration Site and a part of the Olympic Discovery Trail. All pets must be leashed on the walk. Following the noncompetitive Fun Walk, there will be free medical screenings, entertainment and a closing ceremony with an array of door prizes. No pets are allowed inside the building.

All proceeds from the walk go to the Dungeness Valley Health and Wellness Clinic, Sequim’s free clinic, supplying urgent and chronic medical care for the uninsured and underinsured. Additional information about the clinic is available at www.sequimfreeclinc.org.

Calling all OTA volunteers

The annual Olympic Theatre Arts volunteer appreciation potluck picnic begins at noon Saturday, Aug. 27, at the Olympic Theatre Arts Center, 414 N. Sequim Ave. Pulled pork and buns will be provided, as well as iced tea, lemonade, sangria and beer. Please bring a salad or dessert to share. The improv group Tweaking Reality will perform, beginning at 12:45 p.m., with the annual membership meeting following at 1 p.m. This is a good chance to learn about new volunteer opportunities at OTA, meet up with friends and enjoy some good food.

Senior Nutrition menu set

Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4:30 p.m. at the Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Suggested donation is $5 (60 and over), $8 guest and a 24-hour advance reservation is needed. RSVP to 683-8491. Menus are subject to change.
