County to repave section of Carlsborg Road

Clallam County commissioners were scheduled to consider awarding a contract this week for repaving three-quarters of a mile of the 1.8-mile roadway between U.S. Highway 101 and Old Olympic Highway east of the Sequim Valley Airport in Carlsborg.

The bid opening was conducted Feb. 20. Lakeside Industries was the low bidder at $900,315. The other bidder was Nordland Construction NW Inc. for $1,081,710.

The formal bid award was slated to be conducted at the commissioners’ regular weekly meeting, on Feb. 27 in the commissioners meeting room at the Clallam County Courthouse in Port Angeles.

The project will include resurfacing, restoring and shoulder widening along three-quarters of a mile of the roadway from Idea Place to Old Olympic Highway, mileposts 1.01 to 1.76.

According to the project’s plans and specifications, traffic delays are to be held to generally less than 10 minutes, with longer periods subject to the engineer’s approval.

No traffic restrictions or interruptions will be allowed on Sundays or holidays nor after noon prior to a holiday or holiday weekend.

Nor will traffic restrictions or interruptions be allowed during either the Sequim Irrigation Festival (May 3-11) or the Sequim Lavender Festival (July 19-22).

Money for the project will come from the county road fund, the state’s County Road Administration Board and one of the county’s Real Estate Excise Tax funds.

The project was included in the county’s 2024-2029 Six-Year Transportation Improvement Program, which describes the roadway as a “rural major collector.”

The County Road Administration Board’s website described the need for the project. “Over time the road has been widened in areas for business access and is heavily traveled. It is in need of surface improvements. This project will provide for some pavement repair, (hot-mix asphalt) overlay and pavement markings.”
