District 3 crews battle trailer, truck fires over Valentine’s Day

A trailer on US Highway 101 was ruled a total loss on Valentine’s night while a barn was saved early the next morning by firefighters with Clallam County Fire District 3.

Assistant Chief Dan Orr said firefighters dispatched to the trailer fire at 7:42 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 14, at 256832 US Highway 101 — just east of Blue Mountain Road in Port Angeles — to discover heavy smoke.

The three residents were not home when firefighters first responded but arrived later.

Despite efforts by firefighters to stop the flames, two beloved cats perished in the fire and the trailer was deemed a total loss, Orr said.

Clallam PUD staff responded to the fire and secured power for nearby residents, and the Red Cross of Clallam and Jefferson County was put in touch with the fire victims, Orr said.

The fire’s cause remains under investigation, he said.

At 5:11 a.m. Friday morning, firefighters combated a fire inside the engine of a pick-up truck inside a barn at 4620 Old Olympic Highway west of Kitchen-Dick Road in Sequim.

Orr said firefighters quickly knocked the fire down and the barn suffered superficial damage.

Investigators believe the fire began in or near the truck’s block heater but they plan to investigate further.

No injuries were reported at the truck fire.
