Dungeness Meadows fire displaces family

A mobile home in Dungeness Meadows was lost to a fire early Monday morning.

Clallam County Fire District 3 responded to the 9-1-1 call at 5:13 a.m. Feb. 21 at 377 Dungeness Meadows, just south of Sequim city limits.

Next door neighbor Paris Lukens said she randomly woke up around 5 a.m., much earlier than she normally does, and glanced out her window to see smoke, so she called 9-1-1.

Assistant Chief Tony Hudson reports the single wide mobile home was destroyed but all its residents, a family of four, were out of the structure safely.

Homes on both sides were damaged but residents were able to return to their homes, he said.

Cause of the fire is under investigation, Hudson said.

The family confirmed with the Dungeness Meadows Homeowners Association that they’ve secured housing with family members and are working with the Red Cross to replace material items such as clothes, and find more permanent housing.

Lukens said flames reached high into the trees but the firefighters’ actions and new snowfall prevented the fire from spreading more.

Hudson said the “early morning snow definitely helped contain the fire spread.”

Lukens and fiance Ron Welches have lived next door for about 10 months and said because of the fire’s heat, three windows shattered and their east-facing siding peeled off.

The homes are rentals and insured, Welches said.

For the fire, the fire district sent two fire engines, two fire tenders, a rescue truck, a medic unit and 15 personnel total, along with Olympic Ambulance’s response, Hudson reports.
