Fire damages residence, shop on Happy Valley Road

A fire on Happy Valley Road last week damaged a large shop and living quarters.

No injuries were reported in the 1400 block of Happy Valley Road at about 4 p.m. on Friday, June 23.

A volunteer firefighter was first to arrive on scene and reported that an exterior fire, a wood pile, was on fire and had extended into the large,36-foot-by-60-foot shop with attached living quarters, Clallam County Fire District 3 representatives said.

Two people — one out back near the wood pile, and another inside the shop with a garden hose — were looking to put out the fire.

Sixteen responders responded, with three fire engines, two water tenders, a medic Unit, an ambulance from Olympic Ambulance, a rehab unit and battalion chief on scene. Clallam County PUD arrived and secured power to the shop and attached residence.

The owner told firefighters that he had been doing chores in the area, cutting wood and using a weed burner in the past two days and that when he came around the back side of the shop he saw his wood pile on fire with flames going up the exterior wall.

The fire burned off the ends of the shop trusses and entered the interior, burning insulation in three of the four open bays, fire district representatives said. The exact cause is under investigation.

Fire District officials remind the community that burn regulations have been put in place early this year because of drier than normal conditions. With the early burn restrictions, weed burning devices are also suspended from use.
