Jon Bugher, retired Clallam County Fire District 2 fire chief, teaches home gardeners how to make their landscapes more fire-resistant at noon Thursday, July 25, in the county commissioners meeting room of the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles; and at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 27, at the Class Act at Woodcock Garden program at demonstration garden, 2711 Woodcock Road, Sequim.

Bugher will discuss fire-resistant plants and maintenance practices such as pruning, eliminating the ladder of fuel and establishing defensible space between a home and adjacent property to protect the home from wildland fire.

His landscaping tips for fire safety and inhibiting fire spread include the use of nonflammable materials and the discontinuance of some traditional gulch ground covers. A WSU Clallam County Master Gardener, Bugher has over 40 years of firefighting experience and fire-prevention training.
