A recovery and rebuild fund has been established for Steve and Debra Reynolds, who lost most of their home and belongings in a May 20 fire in their 1976 doublewide mobile home on Barnes Road.

Debra Reynolds heard a crackling sound in her son’s bedroom walls after arriving home and opened the door to find large amounts of smoke.

She attempted to extinguish the fire with an extinguisher but was unsuccessful. After exiting the house, she called 9-1-1 about 8 p.m. from her wireless phone.

Four engines, a Sequim ambulance and two water tenders, large tanks used for dispensing water, were sent to the fire. The area has no fire hydrants, so firefighters laid a 5-inch water supply line down the Reynolds’ driveway and another engine parked on Barnes Road to provide more water.

The Reynoldses had smoke detectors in place but did not hear an alarm.

"Mobile homes of this age become fully involved very quickly and it is extremely important that residents evacuate as quickly as possible," said Assistant Fire Chief Roger Moeder, the incident commander.
