Employees from the Sequim Gazette earned 22 awards in the Better Newspaper Contest following the 124th Washington Newspaper Publishers Association convention in Everett Oct. 7-8.

The Gazette’s John Huston and Robert Morris earned first place in Best Special Promotion-Single Ad/Larger than a Half Page for “Jamestown S’Klallam Longhouse.”
Harmony Liebert and Melanie Reed took home first place in Best Full Page Ad/Process Color for “Jamestown Family Health Center.” Cathy Clark and the Gazette advertising staff took second in the same category for “Lavender Festival Thank You.”
Liebert and Clark took first place in Best Color Ad/Smaller Than Half-Page for “Wilder Honda” and took second in the same category for “Dungeness Meadow Farm.”
Huston and Mandy Harris placed third in Best Branding Ad/Single Advertiser for “Olympic Rehabilitation.”
Huston earned second place in Best Advertising Insert for “Hartnagel’s 50th Anniversary”; the Gazette staff picked up third place in the same category for “Sequim Year Round.”
The Gazette advertising staff earned second place in Best Promotion of Newspaper/Single Ad for “House Ad Testimonial.”

Special Sections editor Patricia Morrison Coate earned first place in Best Topical/Non-Tourism Special Sections for the Living on the Peninsula Winter 2010 edition, “Saluting Those Who Serve.”
She also earned second place in Best Lifestyle/Culture Special Sections for the Living on the Peninsula Spring 2011 edition, “Home Is Where the Heart Is.”
Coate placed third in Best Lifestyle Feature Story for “True Blue to J.D. Green,” a profile of Josh Borte’s restoration of antique John Deer tractors that was featured in the Living on the Peninsula Summer 2010 edition.
Reporter Matthew Nash was awarded third place in Best Lifestyle Feature for “To Boldly Go Where Nostalgia Begins,” his exploration of the 2011 Seattle Comic-Con convention.
Reporter Amanda Winters earned third place in General News Photo with “A Dramatic Drill,” her photo of District 3 volunteer trainees extinguishing flames from a prop car at the Carlsborg training center in late December.
Editor Michael Dashiell was one of three finalists for WNPA’s Sportswriter of the Year.
He also earned three first-place awards for sportswriting: Best Sports News Story for “Pirates Are Golden,” coverage of Peninsula College’s first soccer championship; Best Sports Feature for “Gallagher, Gridiron Goliath, Chooses Georgetown,” about 2010 Sequim High School grad Thomas Gallagher’s choice of schools; and “Best Topical Column” for his Reporter’s Notebook sports columns.
In Best Sports Page Design, Dashiell took home second place for his preview of the 2010 Sequim-Port Angeles football season.
In photography, Dashiell earned first place in black-and-white sports photography for “The Fallen,” capturing the dramatic finish of the 2010 class 2A state track meet’s 300-meter hurdle event, and second place in the same category for “Nice Catch,” a photo of Frank Catelli’s interception against Washington in the class 2A district crossover playoff game last fall.
In color sports photography-action, Dashiell earned second place for “A Record-Breaking Race,” revealing the start of a 100-meter dash race that saw two Sequim athletes (Samantha Whiteside and Anna LaBeaume) beat Sequim’s school mark.
