Caleb Simonson has aspirations to start his own band.
But most folks visiting Sequim for the 114th Irrigation Festival likely will get to know Simonson for his visual art before his music.
Simonson, a fifth-grade student at Greywolf Elementary School, designed this year’s festival button, now on sale for $2
from Greywolf and Helen Haller Elementary School students.
"I designed it in third grade," Simonson says. "I didn’t do much with it for two years. Then I added trees and the schoolhouse."
The design proved a winner. On March 19, three Irrigation Festival royalty court members joined royalty "mom" Lynn Horton to ask Sequim elementary school students to help with selling the buttons around town as festival fundraisers.
The bonus for Sequim’s young students comes March 26, when the top three button sellers from each school each receive a prize, the top being a brand new bicycle.
For Simonson, who hadn’t seen the button as of last Thursday, seeing his design around town figures to be "pretty weird."
