Kinderkids are out of this world

The names of more than a dozen youths from the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula’s KinderKids club will orbit the earth on a satellite next year, as part of a NASA program called "Send Your Name Around the Earth." The KinderKids first were given a brief talk on satellites and launch vehicles by a retired aerospace engineer and they handled models of a satellite and a launch vehicle, along with a real missile nose cone. Then their names were entered into a NASA Web site where their names are placed onto a computer chip which will fly on the Glory satellite. They received NASA certificates with their individual names on the certificates, along with a picture of the Glory satellite. The satellite is designed to collect data on chemical, microphysical and optical properties of aerosols, and collect solar irradiance data for the long-term climate record. The launch of the satellite is planned for June 15, 2009.
