Kiwanis offer mini-educational grants

Group looks to support local children

Members of the Kiwanis of Sequim-Dungeness offer financial help through “mini-grants” to groups, individuals, organizations, and small businesses whose work focuses on making the lives of children in Sequim better.

Individual grants will be given up to a few hundred dollars for miscellaneous needs, such as helping complete an unfinished project, counseling services, buying sports equipment, and/or other small needs.

Club members ask for” the name of the entity; whether a nonprofit or for-profit status; contact information; mission of the entity; how funds would be used; how children would benefit; how benefits would be measured; amount requested; how many children would benefit, and economic status of the children/families.

Applications must be received by April 15 with awards announced May 4 and disbursed the next day.

With questions and/or to submit a mini-grant, contact Philomena Lund, treasurer for the Kiwanis of Sequim-Dungeness, at 360-477-4742 or philomenalund@ wavecable.com.

Applications also can be mailed to “Kiwanis Mini-Grant, 12 Kirner Ridge Lane, Sequim, WA 98382.”

Lund said since the pandemic began, club members have continued to put water filter sales into a service account and with many activities cancelled they have a larger than normal balance to support the community.

Club members will review the applications and decide how to award grants, she said.

“Our overall goal is to increase awareness within the community of all the needs children have and how many, many people in our community focus their work on meeting those needs,” Lund said.

Kiwanis is a world-wide service organization focused solely on the needs of children. Local Kiwanians have volunteered for and financially supported programs/projects such as Back to School Fair, bikes for “Toys for Sequim Kids,” Sequim Community Aid, Little League, Youth soccer, United Way Literacy Council, local food banks and disaster preparedness efforts.
