Learn how to ‘solarize’ at Expo

A free presentation on using solar power to generate clean, renewable electricity for homes or businesses is from 10:15-11:15 a.m. Sunday, March 14, in the Sequim High School cafeteria, 601 N. Sequim Ave.

Power Trip Energy Corp of Port Townsend will present the program as part of this weekend’s North Peninsula Building Association’s Building, Remodeling and Energy Expo.

"The Sequim area is blessed with abundant sunshine as well as individuals who value generating their own renewable energy from the sun," said Andy Cochrane, president of Power Trip Energy and presenter of the solar workshop at the energy Expo.

Power Trip Energy has been installing solar photovoltaic systems since 2003 and has completed more than 175 systems, including a new system on Sequim High School.

"The Sequim area has a long list of positive attributes and being the best location in western Washington for solar power is certainly one of them," said Cochrane.

There are a number of financial incentives to using solar power.

In Washington, utilities are required to allow customer generation of electricity from solar power with excess power sold back to the utility at the retail rate. This process is called "net metering." Also, the owners of grid-tied solar systems are paid an additional 15 cents to 36 cents per kilowatt hour for all electricity generated. The higher rate is available if the solar modules are made in Washington. Purchase and installation of solar PV is exempt from Washington sales tax and qualifies residential and commercial owners to a 30-percent federal income tax credit.
