In celebration of Women’s History Month, the League of Women Voters of Clallam County in partnership with the Port Angeles Main Library of the North Olympic Library System will screen an award-winning docudrama at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 18, in the Raymond Carver meeting room.
The film stars Academy Award-winning actors Hilary Swank and Anjelica Huston and tells the story of the harrowing struggles women endured to secure the right to vote.
Lounette Templeton, president of the League of Women Voters, said, “We sometimes take for granted the right to vote, forgetting what it cost the suffragettes for the privilege. After seeing this film, I doubt any woman or man will ever pass up an opportunity to vote.”
Film critic and author Rebecca Redshaw will introduce the film. Light refreshments will be served and an audience discussion with league members will follow the screening. The event will be open to the public at no cost. This film is recommended for mature teens and adults.
The film follows suffragette leaders Alice Paul and Lucy Burns as they, and other determined women, fought for the passage of the 19th Amendment.
The two activists broke from the mainstream women’s rights movement, creating a more radical wing securing women’s voting rights in 1920.
The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization founded in 1920.
It is a grassroots organization, working nationally, statewide and locally, directed by the consensus of members nationwide.
The league encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues and influences public policy through education and advocacy.
Redshaw is an author and playwright. Her plays include “A Conversation with Hattie McDaniel,” “Hennessey Street,” “Four Women,” “Spider on the Sill” and “Dear Jennifer,” which was adapted from her novella. Redshaw’s column of reviews, Sofa Cinema, is published in the Sequim Gazette.
