Lightning damages homes in Sequim

Several houses in the Sequim area were damaged by lightning Friday, May 9.

At least three houses were struck by lightning Friday, May 9, shortly after noon.

Firefighters from Clallam County Fire District 3 were on the scene of the neighboring houses off Craftsman Court near Bell Hill.

First arriving units found the unoccupied home with roof tiles and siding littering the roof and ground. Heavy charring and light smoke exited holes from the roof into the attic space. A survey of the scene discovered that damage to the home struck by lightning spread to four other homes.

“It (thunder) sounded just right over head,” Cinda Chambers, president of Sequim Cottage Homeowners Association, said. “We have irrigation boxes blown off and pipes broken.”

Susan Lagerquist’s home was one of the houses struck by the lightning while she was taking a nap inside.

“It sounded like a huge crash and made a big boom,” Lagerquist said. “I didn’t really realize what had happened at first.”

Part of the Lagerquist’s house lost electricity because of the lightning.

“I’ve lived here and the Seattle area most of my life and have never seen anything like this,” Lagerquist said. A separate home’s roof was struck and slightly smoking.

Firefighters entered the vacant house to alleviate fire danger.

At about 11:15 a.m., Fire District 3 received a report of lightning striking a structure at 90 Elizabeth Lane. First arriving units found minor structural damage to the outside siding, gutters and one wall inside of the home.

No fire was noted but several areas of the home’s siding had charring.

The owner was at home during the strike and was unnerved but not injured, fire district officials said.

No injuries were reported in either incident.
