It’s finally over.

The proposed Carlsborg crematory won’t be built, Jason Linde said Friday of the project first announced in March 2008.

"I’ve got an alternate site where we’ll try to site it in Clallam County," he said.

He declined to reveal the new location because, Linde said, his funeral home competitors funded the opposition to his Carlsborg proposal.

Linde operates Linde Family Funeral Service in Sequim.

"It was taking too long in Carlsborg. The spot we’ve secured will be easier to do.

"Hopefully we will be starting in the next six months," he said.

Clallam County Superior Court Judge George Wood signed an order on July 9 dismissing Linde’s appeal.

That means the Clallam County commissioners’ December 2008 decision denying Linde’s application for a cadaver refrigeration unit and crematorium in Carlsborg is final.

In March 2008, Linde proposed installing a cremation chamber in a warehouse-style building in Carlsborg Industrial Park.

He twice was given permission to open the crematorium but both times those decisions were appealed by neighboring business owners and a group called Citizens for Carlsborg.

DayHawk Kim, a member of Citizens for Carlsborg, said the group was delighted to have prevailed in the lengthy battle.

"It’s taken a long time, I believe it started in April 2008. We’re very thankful to the residents and business owners in Carlsborg who supported our efforts.

"We’re also thankful for the county commissioners supporting the county’s stated vision for Carlsborg and for enforcing the existing zoning code.

"We felt the proposed land use was incompatible with the county’s zoning laws, and comparing to a vet clinic was far-fetched in our minds," Kim said.

County hearing examiner Chris Melly originally approved the crematory, mistakenly saying veterinarians in Clallam County operated such incinerators. None do so.

County prosecutor Deb Kelly said she welcomed Linde’s decision to drop his appeal:

"I share a collective sigh of relief with the surrounding businesses and home- owners."
