Whatcom did Saturday what no Peninsula conference foe has been able to — earn a point off the top-ranked Pirates.

Alain Murhula scored with nearly no time remaining as the visiting Orcas stunned Peninsula by earning a 1-1 draw, briefly keeping five points back of PC in the North Division.

Juan Carillo scored Peninsula’s lone goal off an assist from Michael Day in the first half, but Whatcom kept PC out of the Orca net for the remaining 72 minutes as Orca keeper Manuel Mendez made eight saves.

Peninsula’s Brannon Dwyer had three stops in the draw.

The result ended Peninsula’s eight-game winning streak.

The Pirates remain ranked No. 1 in the NWAC and No. 13 in the national junior college poll, outscoring opponents 39-9. They haven’t lost since Oct. 31, 2015.

PC stops Skagit

These Pirates like to spread the wealth.

Seven different PC players found the net in a 7-1 blowout of the visiting Skagit Valley Cardinals.

Joe Hollimon got things started for PC in the sixth minute and Salvador Vargas set up Miguel Valderrama for a second at 18 minutes. Jose Soto slatted a third goal for Peninsula a minute later.

Skagit broke the shutout about five minutes into the second half, but Peninsula responded with goals from Cesar Gervacio, Marlon Nava, Adrian Benitez and Alex Ramos.

Looking ahead

Peninsula is at Edmonds on Oct. 12, and after an Oct. 15 home date with Shoreline, PC is at Everett on Oct. 19, Skagit Valley on Oct. 22 and Whatcom on Oct. 26.

Peninsula finishes the regular season Oct. 29 at home against Edmonds.

The NWAC tournament begins Nov. 2 with pigtail games, followed by quarterfinal games Nov. 5. The Final Four is set for Nov. 11-13 at the Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila.

Gervacio honored

It didn’t take long for Cesar Gervacio to make an impression on Peninsula College soccer fans — or the record book. The freshman from San Jose, Calif., scored all five goals in the No. 1-ranked Pirates’ rout of Shoreline on Sept. 28, tying a school single-game scoring record. He also contributed two goals and an assist in an Oct. 1, 6-1 win over Everett. For his efforts, Gervacio was named Under Armour Men’s Soccer Player for week six.
