It’s not every day torn knee ligaments turn out to be good news.

Yet, that’s exactly how Sequim artist Dana Hyde describes an accident involving her two standard poodles.

In early August, Hyde, owner of Metal and Mud, and her two standard poodles Gracie and Cooper were playing at the dog park at Carrie Blake Park when the poodles, running from one end of the park to the other, clipped the outsides of both of Hyde’s knees simultaneously. The resulting torn ligaments meant Hyde could shift priorities from her metal work to painting. And from that, she was able to have an art show she had been planning for a year.

Hyde said she had had no time between regular business commitments to complete enough pieces for the show until the accident.

Now Hyde is getting ready to open a Nov. 7 show at Studio Bob in Port Angeles. The show, she says, is a reality, in part, thanks to her dogs.

The contemporary steel cut and painted forms she crafts are, as far as Hyde knows, exclusive to Metal and Mud. Inspired by masters such as Picasso, O’Keefe, Matisse and Kandinsky, Hyde’s painted metal figures are "all about good energy,"

"There is nothing tentative about what I do," Hyde says. She believes her audience will "not be lulled by any of my work."

Hyde says she strives for "happy pieces that exude a playfulness and whimsy that can be felt from the inside out."

Hyde’s 45-piece show repertoire includes these metal paintings and three canvas works as large as 5 feet by 6 feet. Everything is framed in metal. The show is titled Metal and Mud Renaissance.

Studio Bob is located at 1181/2 E. Front St., Port Angeles. Hyde will be showing with ceramic artist Diana Stewart.

A catered artists’ reception begins at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7. Hours on Saturday are 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
