Milestone: Lashua gains Soroptimist award

Peninsula College journalism students Eric Trent and Naomi Gish recently were awarded scholarships to attend the Port Townsend Film Festival (Sept. 25-27).

Soroptimist International of Sequim recently awarded its annual Professional Technical Award of $2,000 to Melissa Lashua.

Lashua will receive her associate degree in nursing degree in June 2016 and then plans to receive her BSN through the University of Washington.

After years of waitressing, Lashua said she felt she needed to find a career that would provide more security and benefits for her 7-year-old daughter and herself. Her interest always has been in nutrition, health and exercise and all her hard work is becoming a realization.

The Professional Technical Award is given to a student enrolled in a non-degree program leading to a certificate or license and is awarded each September. The $2,000 award is used for tuition or needed supplies.
