Nestled on a chair next to a new-looking MacBook computer in a room adjacent to the home she shares with her sister, writer Hana Cannon admitted she has a “very vivid imagination.”

Growing up in the heart of Hollywood, Cannon recalled how her father, a former animator for Disney, MGM and Warner Brothers, would have her read him stories from books the moment she learned how to read.

“He would close his eyes and picture them in his head to see if they’d make good movies,” Cannon said.

Cannon inherited her parents creativity — her mother was a painter for Disney — and after earning an A-plus on a fiction paper in grade school, her fate was sealed: She wanted to become a writer.

Early this year, Cannon channeled her imagination and creativity into a book, the first in what she hopes becomes a series.

“Murder in an Amethyst Haze” follows the paths of three sexagenarian friends who call themselves the Juicy Crone Sisterhood as they try to solve a murder that occurred four decades earlier. The journey takes them from their hometown near Laguna Beach, Calif., to a former bordello in Nevada, to eastern Washington.

Cannon said she adds to her story a touch of metaphysics, which according to Wikipedia, “is the branch of philosophy investigating principles of reality transcending those of any particular science, traditionally, cosmology and ontology.”

In solving the crime, the women rely on Tarot cards, astrology and Aikido to help them, a touch Cannon said she added because she said metaphysics was part of her upbringing.

“I think it adds something to the story,” she said.

Cannon, who calls the series Juicy Crone Mysteries, said she made the main characters of the sisterhood older women on purpose.

“I want people to acknowledge older women and not be afraid to be one,” she said. “In Hollywood where I grew up, more than anywhere, women have to be young and women are terrified to become older.”

She added that unlike many writers, she did not take characteristics from real people to create her characters — the three women are pure figments of her imagination.

Cannon said she hopes to incorporate shades of purple in each of the series’ books — she currently is working on a prequel, “Body in the Lavender Patch” — and the color theme was not acquired when Cannon moved to Sequim eight years ago.

“I’ve been a purple freak since I was a teenager,” Cannon said, gesturing around the room that is decorated in shades of lavender. A peek into her closet shows many purple-colored items of clothing. “I researched all different shades of purple and I thought I’d use it in my stories.”

Cannon hopes to get all four books in the series done by the end of the year and, in a nod to her Hollywood roots, also hopes to write a screenplay.

“I want the sisterhood to take off,” Cannon said. “My goal is to encourage women to be OK with getting older.”
