Cub Scout Pack hosts kick-off party
Sequim Cub Scout Pack 4490 invites boys in first grade through fifth grade to join the Scouts. Outdoor adventures, learning activities and fun are all part of being a Cub Scout. The Pack 4490 kick-off party is 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, at the Boys & Girls Club in Sequim. Food is provided along with activities for the family. Annual tourism summit
The 2008 Olympic Tourism Summit will have three speakers and lots of new information for its one-day seminar from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, at the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribal Center in Blyn. Hosted by the Olympic Peninsula Tourism Commission, the cost for the summit is $35 for the first registrant from a company and $25 for each additional registrant and lunch is included. Vehicle tax exemption
Purchases of new, clean, alternative fuel vehicles and hybrids will be exempt from sales tax beginning Jan. 1, 2009. The exemption was enacted by the Legislature in 2005 with a delayed effective date. The exemption is effective through Dec. 31, 2010. It includes the 0.3-percent motor vehicle sales tax.
Qualifying vehicles include new passenger cars, light duty trucks and medium duty passenger vehicles that are powered by clean alternative fuels such as natural gas, propane, hydrogen or electricity or use hybrid technology and have an estimated EPA highway mileage rating of at least 40 mpg.
Any payment or deposit made toward the purchase of a qualifying vehicle before Jan. 1, 2009, qualifies for the tax exemption as long as the vehicle is registered, titled and delivered to the purchaser from Jan. 1, 2009, through Dec. 31, 2010.
The exemptions also generally apply to leases and out-of-state purchases of new qualifying vehicles. Purchases of new vehicles that the sellers convert into qualifying vehicles prior to or as part of the sale also qualify for the exemptions.
Septic system work
group meeting planned
The Clallam County On-site Septic System Work Group meets from 6-8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22, in Room 160 at the County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles. The work group will be discussing septic system inspection training for homeowners and other topics. Citizens are welcome and can provide feedback during public comment periods.

Well 101 class offered
Clallam County Environmental Health is offering a Well 101 class. The class is for operators of small community water systems and for private well owners. Participants will learn how to inspect, maintain and protect their well water system and about testing the water quality. The class will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, at the Dungeness River Audubon Center, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road, Sequim. The class is free and open to the public. No preregistration is required. Get out your walking shoes
The fifth annual Clinic Fun Walk benefiting the Dungeness Valley Health & Wellness Clinic will be on Oct. 4, beginning at the Guy Cole Center at Carrie Blake Park. Registration is at 8 a.m. and the walk begins at 9 a.m. Walkers have a choice of an easy one-mile walk around the park or a 5-mile route along the Olympic Discovery Trail east of the park. Hospital guild meets,
asks for volunteers
Sequim-Dungeness Hospital Guild will have its first meeting of the fall season at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim. The guild provides funding to Olympic Memorial Hospital, Clallam County Fire District 3 and scholarships for those in the medical field. The guild uses The Thrift Shop as a means of fundraising and is in need of volunteers at the shop. For information, call 683-4393.
Calling all actors
Auditions for Olympic Theatre Arts’ "Peter and the Wolf" will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 20, at the theater, 414 N. Sequim Ave. This is a musical comedy based on the children’s tale. Needed are a young boy for the part of Peter, a young girl, preferably with gymnastics experience, three men and two women. Please bring music and be prepared to sing. The show opens Dec. 5. Veterans Benefits Day planned
A veterans benefits day will be held from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Sept. 20 at the Port Angeles Veterans Center, 216 S. Francis St., Port Angeles. Featured speakers will present updated and relevant information for all veterans and their families. Hot dogs, hamburgers and potato salad will be provided. Wal-Mart stores offer
NOAA weather emergency radios
Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. will offer and program National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio Receivers at select Wal-Mart stores, including the Sequim and Port Angeles stores, from noon-4 p.m., on Saturday, Sept. 20. Local Emergency Management volunteers will program the radios, which will be on sale through the event only. Volunteers will also distribute information on disaster preparedness and will provide a list of suggested items for a ready kit.
Since coastal areas are particularly vulnerable to storms, high winds and tsunamis, this program will focus on areas of Western Washington along the Pacific and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. NOAA’s National Weather Service broadcasts conditions 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
