United Way dinner
The United Way of Clallam County will honor the more than 100 volunteers and thousands of donors who helped with the 2008 campaign.
The annual awards dinner and presentations will begin with a 5:30 p.m. social hour followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. Thurs., Feb. 12, in the Port Angeles Crab House Juan de Fuca Room at the Red Lion Hotel in Port Angeles. A Port Angeles High School string quartet will provide social hour entertainment.
Cost is $24 per person, and reservations are necessary.
While final figures won’t be announced until March 31, Dr. Gary Cohn, 2008 campaign chairman, said the campaign is around $940,000. The fund drive goal this year is $1 million. Contributions toward the campaign received before March 31 will be included in the campaign’s final total.
The dinner is open to campaign volunteers, donors, United Way partner agencies and their volunteers and any other interested persons. Reservations should be made by Monday, Feb. 9, by calling the United Way office at 457-3011 or e-mailing to info@unitedwayclallam.org.
Free NAMI classes
Free classes to help caregivers and family members of persons with brain disorders will start Saturday.
The 12-week Family to Family course will start at 10 a.m. in The Commons at Serenity House, 2203 W. 18th St., Port Angeles.
Family to Family provides participants with information about almost every variety of mental illness, their causes, symptoms and treatment.
The 21/2-hour classes include material that a loved one’s treatment provider often will not disclose to family members.
There is no charge for the course, which was developed by the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill and is taught by local NAMI members.
The instructors themselves have faced mental illness in their families and share support and coping strategies to class participants.

Time to order native plants
Clallam Conservation District is accepting orders for its annual native plant sale through Feb. 20.
The bare-root tree and shrub seedlings are sold in bundles of 10. Conifer trees are $12 per bundle, and deciduous trees and shrubs are $15 per bundle. Orders are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
Although several species have sold out, plenty of evergreen and deciduous trees and shrubs are still available. Remaining evergreen trees include Douglas-fir, grand fir, shore pine, Sitka spruce, western hemlock and western red cedar.
Remaining deciduous trees include Pacific crab apple, red alder and vine maple. Remaining shrubs include blue elderberry, evergreen huckleberry, Indian plum, mock orange, ninebark, nootka rose, oceanspray, tall Oregon grape, red elderberry, red flowering currant, red osier dogwood, snowberry, thimbleberry and twinberry.
The Conservation District conducts the annual sale to make affordable native plants available for wildlife habitat enhancement and environmentally friendly landscaping.
The plant sale is a not-for-profit sale. Any surplus revenues are used by the Conservation District to support ecological restoration and educational programs.
Plants will be available for pick-up on March 7.

MAC Nite planned
Sequim Museum and Arts Center holds MAC Nite, its annual dinner/auction, from 5-9 p.m. on March 21 at SunLand Golf and Country Club.

Birding workshop scheduled
The national Audubon Society and Cornell Lab of Ornithology will coordinate a national bird census on Presidents Day weekend.
Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society provides a workshop 10 a.m.-noon Feb. 14 to explain the importance of the census, how to collect data and enter information online.

See a timeless love story
"Romeo and Juliet" opens at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, and continues at 7 p.m. Feb. 7, 13-14 at the Sequim High School auditorium.
Tickets cost $8 and are available at the door. Senior citizens and Sequim High School students with ASB cards pay $6.
Jenni Newell and Stevie Holloway play the lead roles, with supporting parts being performed by Isaac Boekelheide as Mercutio, Stephanie Gooch as Juliet’s nurse, James Willis as Benvolio and Danny Hall as Tybolt. The supporting cast is made up of 30 high school and middle school students.

Employee wellness
Christin Maks, registered dietitian, speaks about "Employee Wellness – How Nutrition and Exercise Reduce the Risk of Disease" at the noon Feb. 10 Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce luncheon.
The luncheon will be held at Elk’s Lodge, 143 Port Williams Road, east of Sequim Avenue.
