NOLS sets women’s suffrage celebration with ‘Broads & Broadsides’

The North Olympic Library System hosts “Broads & Broadsides: The Dead Feminists Celebrate the Centennial of Women’s Suffrage” at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 20, on Zoom.

The 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which gave women the right to vote, was first introduced to Congress in 1878 but not passed until 1919. It was finally ratified into law Aug. 18, 1920. The amendment prohibits the government from denying the right to vote to citizens of the United States on the basis of sex.

Registration is required to receive Zoom information (participants can listen online or by phone).

Register online at www.nols.org or call a local NOLS branch.

In honor of our collective civic duties and celebration of this freedom, artists Chandler O’Leary and Jessica Spring will discuss some of the women featured in their award-winning book “Dead Feminists: Historic Heroines in Living Color.” The presentation will also include a virtual tour of their print-making studio.

The artists use classic print-making techniques to create broadsides in the “Dead Feminist” series. Each poster features quotes by historical feminists, tied to current political and social issues, and each limited-edition broadside is letterpress printed from hand-drawn lettering and illustrations.

The ordinary and extraordinary women who made a difference throughout history are collected into the graphic work.

“Dead Feminists: Historic Heroines in Living Color” may be placed on hold through the NOLS catalog and checked out curbside.

Curbside library service, including returns and holds pick-up, is available 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday, at all NOLS locations, and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturdays at Sequim, Port Angeles and Forks branches.
