A two-story single family home was destroyed but no people were injured in a structure fire on Thursday, July 30, near Lower Elwha Road, just west of Port Angeles.
At about 4:55 p.m., firefighters with District 2 (Port Angeles) responded to the blaze, finding the home fully engulfed in flames. The next door neighbor’s home and vehicle were in immediate jeopardy of catching fire. Clallam 2 Fire Rescue personnel were able to prevent the neighbor’s home and vehicle from destruction by cooling down the side of their house using a hose line, district sources said.
In addition to battling the structure fire, surrounding trees and vegetation were igniting from the heat. Firefighters battled the blaze with a deck gun and large diameter hose lines preventing the loss of the adjacent home and surrounding woods.
Quick-thinking neighbors are credited with towing the homeowner’s vehicle to safety, district sources said.
Clallam 2 Fire-Rescue responded with 16 Firefighters, two fire engines, two water tenders, one command vehicle and one medic unit. Joyce Fire District 4 was called for mutual aid and responded with two firefighters and a water tender.
