Sequim High’s Ryan O’Mera keeps inching toward a state championship.

On Wednesday, May 25, the junior posted his first top-10 finish at state, tying for eighth place after shooting rounds of 76 and 81 at The Classic Golf Course in Spanaway.

The performance highlighted Sequim’s efforts at state that saw five Wolves compete and three advance to the second day.

O’Mera, who placed 28th at last year’s 2A state tourney and was 43rd as a freshman in 2009, finished 14 shots back of eventual 2A champ Ryan Wallen of Blaine. Wallen shot a two-day total of 143, including a tourney-best round of 70 on the second day. Interlake’s Andrew Kennedy was second, seven shots back of Wallen.

In his first state appearance, Sequim senior Ezra Perkins missed the second day cut after shooting a 91 in the first round.

Interlake took the boys’ 2A team title, easily outscoring Hockinson and WF West.

Port Angeles’ Jordan Negus missed the second day cut after shooting an 89, finishing in a tie for 53rd place. Teammate Terrance Stevenson withdrew from the tourney.

Estes, Duce finish strong

Junior Hailey Estes, playing in her second state tourney, shot a first round of 87 and was in 16th place before a second round of 99, placing 27th overall at Lake Spanaway Golf Course.

Senior Kim Duce, playing in her fourth state tournament in four years, shot a 95 and 94, placing in a tie for 33rd place. Last year Duce placed 34th as a junior.

In her first state tournament, sophomore Elisa Sallee finished in a tie for 75th place, shooting a first round of 114 and missing the cut.

Sequim’s girls finished seventh in team standings. Bellingham won the 2A girls’ team title with Burlington-Edison second and Fife in third.

Paige Whidbee of Pullman won the 2A girls’ title, the only competitor to break 80 both days. She shot a 72 on the first day and 77 in day two. Cherokee Kim of Steilacoom was five shots back.

Port Angeles’ state entries, Dana Fox (71st) and Sydney Rauch (74th), missed the second day cut.
