Open call for art cart design proposals

The North Olympic Library Foundation is calling for artists and designers to submit design proposals for their Art Cart project. Deadline is June 10.

The North Olympic Library Foundation is calling for artists and designers to submit design proposals for their Art Cart project.

Seven wooden book carts are being decommissioned from the library fleet and creators are needed to turn them into works of art. Local artists of all ages and experience levels are invited to submit design proposals to transform one of these beautiful book carts to meet their artistic vision.

The natural beauty of unpainted wood must remain prominent in the finished product and finished carts must retain their essential “bookcartness” — that is, they must be able to hold items and roll from place to place. Bumpers may be removed. Artists are asked to describe their vision as thoroughly as possible, list the materials and media they plan to use and note if there will be any minor alterations such as holes and plugs. Sketches are strongly encouraged.

Blank-canvas book carts can be viewed in the Port Angeles, Sequim, Forks and Clallam Bay libraries.

The deadline for submitting proposals is noon on June 10.

Artists will be notified by July 1 if their designs have been accepted. Upon acceptance, artists are responsible for picking up the cart, cleaning and embellishing it per the proposal, and returning the finished cart to the Port Angeles Library by Sept. 30.

For more detailed information about how to submit a proposal for an Art Cart, pick up an Art Cart flier at any NOLS branch or contact artcartdesign@gmail.com.

The transformed carts will be exhibited during October, November and December, and auctioned during a fun library event in early 2016. The proceeds will benefit NOLS’ Libraries on the Move.

Libraries on the Move is an ongoing series of projects enhancing the ability of the North Olympic Library System to deliver library services when and where they are needed.

“Watch for the roll-out of the first Libraries on the Move project, Tiny Olympic Libraries, this summer,” said Margaret Jakubcin, NOLS director. “These small, charming browser libraries, made possible through the support of the North Olympic Library Foundation, will make free books available to readers on the move throughout Clallam County.”

The North Olympic Library Foundation sponsors new and innovative systemwide library programs and services and raises funds for major capital needs.
