The final stages of the Port Angeles Main Library’s reconfiguration limits checkout services Friday-Sunday, May 4-20.
The library, at 2210 S. Peabody St., will provide limited checkout services noon-6 p.m. Monday-Saturday using a temporary service area set up in the Carver Meeting Room, in the entrance area.
People still can pick up and place holds on materials, browse and check out items.
Newspapers and some news magazines will be available and wireless access will be available in the lobby.
The library’s main area is closed off and programming isn’t offered during the closure.
Margaret Jakubcin, assistant library director, said branches in Sequim, Clallam Bay and Forks will operate as normal and Port Angeles’ branch will reopen with normal hours May 21.
“It’s possible that the Sequim branch might be a little busier, but it’s hard to predict,” Jakubcin said. “There shouldn’t be any slowdown at all in materials routing. (Port Angeles branch) will be pulling holds as usual and continuing all the normal back room procedures.”
The reconfiguration finishes the final phase ongoing since January and is funded by donations from the Port Angeles Friends of the Library and other donors.
Some of the project’s elements include improving self-service options and customer service desks, adding furnishings, replacing worn carpeting and reducing clutter.
“In the 13 years since the beautiful Port Angeles Library was completed, customer expectations about service, comfort and access have changed dramatically,” Jakubcin said. “NOLS is very fortunate to have received the private funding that is allowing the library to update the facility in order to meet modern expectations. The reconfigured spaces will be both functional and beautiful. We’re looking forward to finishing the project and unveiling it to the public.”
