A 28-year-old Port Angeles man was struck and killed by a truck while he was standing in the northbound lane of U.S. Highway 101 over the Dungeness River on Tuesday evening.
Washington State Patrol reports James Rogers was hit by a 1985 Ford Ranger driven by Michael Carpenter, 52, of Sequim who was traveling west and struck Rogers at 7:09 p.m.
Trooper Russ Winger said Rogers was within the lane and it’s unclear why he was there.
Rogers was pronounced dead at the scene by medical authorities.
State Patrol officials report Carpenter was not impaired and that he pulled over immediately after the incident.
Winger said the driver couldn’t avoid the collision.
The highway was partially closed for three hours and 30 minutes.
The collision remains under investigation, Winger said, and they are doing a toxicology screen of Rogers but the results won’t be available for some time.
