For the first time in its 50-year existence, Studium Generale is going virtual.

Peninsula College’s Studium Generale opens its 2020 Fall Quarter series at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 1, with the traditional Welcome Celebration, a partnership among the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe, the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe, the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe and ʔaʔk̓ʷustəƞáwt̓xʷ House of Learning, Peninsula College Longhouse.

The presentation will be on Zoom, and though organizers say they will miss the opportunity to be together in the Little Theater on the Port Angeles campus, the remote platform will provide more time for dialogue and discussion.

A panel of certified nəxʷsƛ̕ay̕əmucen (Klallam/S’Klallam language) teachers will present this traditional welcome. The annual event was founded by Lola Moses of the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe in 2016, and in the past four years has featured language, culture, arts, poetry and education.

This fall, the college will offer a Klallam language for-credit course (KLA121) in fall quarter. Dr. Timothy Montler and three co-teachers, one from each of the three Klallam/S’Klallam tribes, will team-teach the course.

The course, which will require lessons from the dictionary and grammar book, was made possible by a National Endowment for the Humanities CARES grant that supports humanities faculty, staff and projects impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.
