Students raise $600 for cancer patients

Sequim Middle School Principal Brian Jones and Assistant Principal Scott Harker got their dose of pink on Friday.

They agreed that if students met their $300 fundraiser goal to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month then student leaders could dye the officials’ hair pink.

Students raised more than $600 for Operation Uplift, a local volunteer effort to provide mammograms, along with supportive counseling, education and other help for those diagnosed with cancer.

Eighth-grader Becky Schroepfer, 13, initiated the fundraising effort because she wasn’t sure if the school did anything for breast cancer awareness.

Schroepfer rallied friends Alexis Haman, 13, and Brittany Joy, 13, and student council officers on Monday-Thursday, Oct. 25-28, to put up posters, take around a donation jar at lunchtime, wear pink clothes and dye school shirts pink for $5. Students donated all the funds.

Kristi Toth, a board member for Operation Uplift, received the money from the middle school.
