Purple lights focus on violence

Healthy Families of Clallam County is recognizing Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October by supporting Purple Light Nights.

Healthy Families of Clallam County is recognizing Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October by supporting Purple Light Nights. To raise awareness of domestic violence, purple lights will shine at Bank of America Park at Sequim Avenue and Washington Street throughout October.

"Our goal is to light up the peninsula in purple," said Becca Korby, executive director of Healthy Families, "to raise awareness of this crime and to honor those who have lost their lives or been damaged."

During the week of Oct. 26, a display in the park will represent fatalities in Washington related to domestic violence and a vigil will be held at noon Oct. 29, Korby said.

Residents can support the effort by using purple light bulbs on porches in October and placing strings of purple lights in business windows and in trees along major streets.

Purple light bulbs can be purchased from Healthy Families by calling 452-3811 or e-mailing healfam@olypen.com. Contact information for buying strings of purple lights is available online at www.purplelightnights.org.
