Nearly three years ago, Powell Jones was named the director of the Dungeness River Audubon Center, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road, and it’ll be his 12th year participating in the River Festival happening Sept. 26-28 at Railroad Bridge Park.

When Jones started at the center, he was a volunteer through AmeriCorps before a grant helped the center budget and hire him as a full-time education coordinator. Jones took the place of retiring Bob Boekelheide and has a young family with wife Laura, a Sequim High School science teacher, son Win, 8, a third-grader at Helen Haller Elementary, and Ellie, a 2-year-old.

In-between planning for the festival, Jones took some time to answer some random questions.

Question 11: What is a guilty pleasure of yours?

Jones: Ice cream, (particularly) peanut butter and chocolate. I’m pretty easy-going about the brand. It was my grandfather’s guilty pleasure and my grandparents actually met in an ice cream parlor.

I’m also a huge Seahawks fan. I probably check their website every night even in the offseason. I have been a fan since I was a kid even in the years when they were 4-12. I like to listen to them on the radio but I rarely watch them because I like to be up doing something. I get anxious. I’ll watch it on NFL Rewind a few days later though.

Question 15: Where have you lived?

Jones: I’ve been in Sequim most of my life. I graduated in 1995 from Sequim High School and went to college in Ellensburg and later lived six months in Yakutat, Alaska, (working for the forest service as a river ranger minimizing people and bear contact) before coming back to Sequim.

Question 24: If you could meet anyone from the past, who would it be?

Jones: The Wright Brothers not because I’m into flying but because they were bicycle mechanics. They believed in something and chased it. They thought they could change the world and they did.

Question 39: Mustaches? Cool? Or not?

Jones: Only in November for Movember to support testicular cancer research (and promote awareness of other men’s health issues). Only then will I wear one.

Question 41: Who is one person you would like to arm wrestle?

Jones: I dunno. Who could I beat? I really don’t want to arm wrestle anyone. If I had to, I’d arm wrestle my grandpa in his prime to see where genetics took me.

Bonus Question: What is your favorite part of your job?

Jones: The environment I’m in. I work in a park in my hometown.
