Sailors, supports once again to make the ‘Reach’

Annual Sequim sailboat race raises funds for Volunteer Hospice

The Sequim Bay Yacht Club sponsors its 22nd annual Reach for Hospice on Saturday, Sept. 13, at the John Wayne Marina.

Sailing races on the bay are preceded by fundraising to benefit Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County.

Participating boat captains meet at noon, with the first race to start at 1 p.m. A celebratory potluck and awards ceremony follows at 5 p.m.

In addition to recognizing the race winners and top fundraisers, the first Mickey McGuffin Sportsmanship award will be presented.

Over the years, the yacht club has raised more than $235,000 for Volunteer Hospice.

At Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County, all services are supported by community donations and grants. Recent grant funds have allowed the nursing staff to receive specialized training in end of life and palliative care or symptom management.

The program serves 70-85 families monthly, from Diamond Point to Joyce.

Sailors wishing to race may register by contacting Alan Clark at alankayaks@q.com.

For the potluck, RSVP to Judy Shanks at waquilt@aol.com.

Community members wishing to make a donation may send checks payable to: VHOCC, 540 E. Eighth St., Port Angeles, WA 98362, with the notation, “Reach for Hospice campaign.” Contributions are tax deductible.
