‘Paws’ dogs sniff around P.A. library
in May visit
Olympic Gentle Paws’ therapy dogs visit the Port Angeles Library (2210 S. Peabody Street) from 11 a.m.-noon on Saturday, May 16 in the library’s Children Area.
The therapy dogs love books but can’t quite say the words, so Paws members are looking for lots of youngsters to come to the library and read to them.
The group members encourage children to bring books of their own or read one of the group’s selections.

Soroptimists seek
applications for
technical award
Applications are being accepted by Soroptimist International of Sequim for its annual Professional Technical Award.
The $1,000 award will be given to a female student who is enrolled in a nondegree program that results in a certificate or license.
Eligible applicants must reside within the Sequim School District boundaries or be a graduate of Sequim High School.
The award may be used for tuition and/or supplies needed for the training program.
Applications are accepted until May 16. Application packets are available at Olympic Wi Fi (461 W. Washington St.) and in the Financial Aid office at Peninsula College, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles.

Sequim students
earn EWU honor
Three former Sequim students were named to the Eastern Washington University’s dean’s list for winter quarter 2009.
They are Brandon Fuellas, Peter Lemley and Sarina Walla.
To be named to the EWU dean’s list, an undergraduate student must earn a 3.50 grade-point average with at least 12 credit hours.

get U.W. honors
Sequim’s Kyle Richard was named to the University of Washington’s Foster School of Business dean’s list for his 3.80 grade-point-average. Just 18 years old, he is majoring in finance and expects to graduate in the fall of 2009.
Kyle’s brother Luke Richard, 16, was named to the University of Washington’s College of Arts & Sciences dean’s list for autumn quarter 2008. He hopes to major in aeronautical engineering.
Head Start accepting applications
Sequim Head Start programs are recruiting eligible children and families for the 2009-2010 school year.
Head Start is a federally funded program serving families with children up to age 5.
Three programs are available: a part-day, part-year preschool; a full-day, full-year preschool; and Early Head Start, a year-round program for pregnant women and/or children ages 0-3.
Full-day, full-year Head Start and Early Head Start program options are available in Port Angeles, Sequim and Port Hadlock.
Programs provide meals, education and social and health services to eligible children. Parent involvement is encouraged.

‘Promise’ scholarships available; deadline Thursday
High school graduates from comprehensive and alternative high schools in the Sequim, Port Angeles, Quillayute Valley, Cape Flattery and Crescent school districts may qualify for scholarships through the Clallam Promise Scholarship program.
The award covers $900 per quarter for tuition and fees that are not covered by other state and/or federal grants and up to $200 toward textbooks at the Peninsula College bookstore. The Clallam Promise Scholarship award only can be used at Peninsula College.
To qualify, a student must have attended high school in one of the school districts listed above for at least the last two years of high school and must file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid form and be eligible for federal and/or state financial aid as determined by the Peninsula College Financial Aid Office.
The Clallam Promise Scholarship must begin within one year of a student’s high school graduation date. Once enrolled, students may remain eligible to receive scholarship funds for up to three years.
The application priority deadline is April 30. Applications that are received after that date will be considered based on available funding.
Scholarship and FAFSA applications are available in the Peninsula College Financial Aid Office in the Student Services Building at 1502 E. Lauridsen Boulevard in Port Angeles.

Hospital guild scholarships available; deadline Thursday
Each year the Sequim Dungeness Hospital Guild offers several scholarships to students who are majoring in a subject or program in the medical field.
To be eligible for a 2009-2010 guild scholarship, applicants must be a Clallam County resident who has been accepted at a four-year college or medical school as a full-time student and entering at least their junior year of college.

Physicians’ scholarships, grants up for grabs
Caretakers of the Clallam County Physicians Community Benefit fund are accepting applications for both academic scholarships in medically-related fields and medically-related community grants, both to be awarded in 2009.
The academic scholarships provide tuition support for students in medical fields. To be eligible, a student must be a graduate of a Clallam County high school and have been accepted into (or currently be enrolled in and making satisfactory progress in) a fully-accredited, professional school in a medically-related program.
The community grants encourage one-time, medically-related community projects that benefit a broad cross-section of the community.
Applications for both scholarships and grants may be obtained by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope to: The Clallam County Physicians Community Benefit fund, P.O. Box 3005, Port Angeles, WA 98362.
Completed applications are due by June 1.
The benefit fund was formed in 1995 when Regence BlueShield joined with Clallam County Physicians Service, Inc., a company formed by local physicians to provide health coverage to local citizens.
Sons of Italy offer scholarship
The local chapter of the Order of the Sons of Italy in America is inviting applications for the Elena Buonpane Memorial Scholarship to assist students with an Italian heritage or students interested in Italian culture to further their education.
One $750 scholarship for the 2009-2010 academic school year is awarded this year. Residents of Clallam and Jefferson Counties are eligible to apply.
Criteria for eligibility are Italian heritage; residency in Clallam or Jefferson County; and evidence and name of college or technical school student is enrolled at or applying to.
Funds may be used for books or tuition and will be sent to the school of the student’s enrollment upon notification.
Applications are available at local high schools, the Peninsula College counseling office or by calling Don Zanon at 452-8677.
